As you draw with thread on your sewing machine each line is stitched freehand giving every robin its own unique character. 💞

I’d love for us to come together for a big Christmas card making sew along in November, where we’ll create a little collection of cards together via Zoom, sharing the joy of stitching with like-minded people from all over the world. ✨

These online get togethers are such fun, with a wonderfully supportive atmosphere. From the messages I’ve received so far, I already have a little group ready to join in! 💞

Let me know in the comments below if you’d like to be part of it too, and I’ll set a date✨

There’s nothing quite like gathering flowers from your garden, these for a friend, first thing when the sun’s not quite risen, the mist is still low and the dew heavy on petals. An opportunity to take in some autumn magic when there’s still a little touch of summer in the garden.

The studio has been filled with this lovely collection of embroidered flowers this week, making a welcome change from sewing Christmas cards. 🌸

This pretty collection of forget-me-nots, wood anemones, daffodils and dog roses is now on its way north to a beautiful part of Lancashire.

If you’d like to see the full collection of my embroidered flowers, head to the link in my bio, where you’ll find them under Floral Notecards. 💞 by @sarahbecvardesign

Honestly this is a game changer.

Yes it takes a bit of practice and may be a little fiddly if you have a closed embroidery foot (open toe feet are better 👍) but bringing up your bobbin thread before you start sewing makes the finishing of your work SO much easier.

⭐️ EXTRA TIP ⭐️ turn the wheel on your machine to lower the needle. If you use the foot pedal you’ll end up sewing too many stitches before you’ve even thought about drawing up the bobbin thread 😄

Please ❤️ this post and share so it can reach other’s who love sewing and want to explore more creativity on their machines.

My final workshop of the year in my garden studio was a beautifully festive one.

With fairy lights giving the studio a little Christmas sparkle the sunshine streamed in adding an extra twinkle of its own ✨

We spent the day discovering just how much more creative we can be on our sewing machines with a little fabric and freehand sewing. Every robin brooch had its own personality and the Christmas cards were all wonderfully individual.

There’s something so lovely about seeing everyone’s ideas take shape, sharing inspiration and watching confidence and smiles grow along the way.

A really lovely way to finish my year of workshops in the studio.

Thank you @gemmajclarke @tammy_willbourne and Joan for a wonderful day ❤️ taken in Lewes, East Sussex by @sarahbecvardesign

A patchwork quilt of Christmas cards!

I’m delighted to be sending my full collection of festive designs to @ccc_gallery in Cambridge. An amazing shop in the heart of the city supporting artists and makers from around the UK and local area - everything in their shop is handmade!

I’ve had the pleasure of supplying this lovely outlet for around 15 years, and have also spent a day sewing there making more cards! This was especially lovely as I got to meet some of their customers and they could watch their cards being stitched in front of them 😊

They also have an online shop 💞 taken in Cambridge, UK by @sarahbecvardesign

It’s daunting staring at a blank piece of fabric or a card blank and wondering where to start.

My advice is to take it slowly.

Just start by sewing! Move your hands left and right, breaking the habit of wanting to sew ‘straight’.

It’s all about finding the right balance between the speed of your hand movements and the speed of your machine. Once you’ve found that comfortable rhythm and achieved the stitch length you’re happy with, move on to appliqué pieces of fabric and, gradually, your pictures will start to take shape.
