Honeybees can bite! Did you know that?

Hi 👋 my name is Sarah C and I'm a beekeeping educator

I dont make honey, I dont sell honey, in fact I dont even like honey 😬

But I do love bees 🥰🐝

Truthfully I love all insects. I have a BSc(tech) degree from the University of Waikato here in New Zealand and I specifically went to university to study insects

I've worked in many different entomology departments around Aotearoa but I learnt all about bees from my mentor Dr Mark Goodwin when we worked together in New Zealands leading pollination and bee biology team

I now run my own business www.sarahcsbees.co.nz where I help hobby beekeepers, do bee talks, disease check beehives, and teach beekeeping to newbees 🐝

I love my job and where I'm headed

Thank you all for being on this journey with me 🙏

Happy beekeeping everyone 🥰

TL:DR I do too much 🤦

I didn't even mention that I'm a mum, a partner, and I still work casual shifts at the retirement village 😂😂

But I love it all

If you have questions, or want to book in for any of the (way too many) things that I do, jump over to my website

Happy beekeeping everyone 🐝🥰🐝

Day 11 of #31daysofbees: A bee disaster!!

I accidentally became the swarm 🤦

I was with my students, attempting to get a swarm off a fence post and the queen landed on me, essentially turning me into the swarm!! 🤣🤣😬

I managed to get the queen into the box but it was definitely not the best 'how to catch a swarm' video 🤣🤣

Happy beekeeping everyone 🐝

Swarm catching with my students today 🥰

They both mentioned that they felt so calm around the swarm after learning so much about how honeybees behave and how calm they really are 😁

Education overcomes fear 🫶

It takes a lot of food to feed those fat useless boys 😉 🤣

Day 9 of #31daysofbees A close up 👀

These are bee pupa
Each showing a different age of a honey bee
These pupa were tiny larvae only a few days ago

When the larvae are large enough, the female worker bees put a cap on top of their cell, allowing the pupa to have a safe place to go through metamorphosis

These capped pupa are kept at a very constant temperature and humidity, around 35°C so they are strong and healthy bees when they emerge 😍

It's swarm season!!

Now that it's spring here in Aotearoa New Zealand, I don't go anywhere without a nuc box on the back of my truck

Because you never know when someones going to ring for a swarm pick up 😎

This swarm was rather huge though so I may have to upgrade my nuc box 😬

I love this hive tracking system!!!! @beestarx_

It let's me know, from the comfort of my couch, when something is wrong with my bees, because if the temperature or humidity is off, you know the bees are having issues 😬

Its also super easy to log hive checks, notes, miticide treatments etc which is so good for lazy beekeepers like me who forget to bring their hive diary 🤦

Be sure to jump on to their website and see all the ways they are helping beekeepers around the world 🫶

Thanks so much for gifting me such an awesome and easy way to check my hives 🥹

Happy beekeeping everyone 🐝

Day 6 of #31daysofbees My most required piece of beekeeping equipment may not be what you think

Its actually that small yellow lighter at the front of the picture. The amount of times ive gone out with all my gear only to find that I don't have a means to light my smoker 😭😭😭😭😡

I've actually now switched to a propane gas torch which is way quicker but I still carry lighters all through my car and all my beesuits. Just in case 😉

Happy beekeeping everyone 🐝
