Whether you’re a lover of lettering or you simply want to learn a new skill, join calligrapher @sarahodea in learning the basic techniques of creative calligraphy.

You'll start by learning how to use your pen holder and nib, while discovering how to mix your own ink and what materials work best for what you want to create.

Then, you will explore mark-making exercises, making shapes and strokes, before moving on to letter forms and basic alphabet strokes. Once you have the basics, you’ll work on flourishing the letters by writing out quotes, lyrics, or whatever your chosen message might be.

By the end of the workshop, you will have started to develop your own calligraphy style, allowing for plenty of time to practice and one-to-one help from Sarah. As well as developing skills, you will also leave with your own calligraphy starter kit so you can continue your practice after the workshop.

As we settle into the cosy season of Samhain, this is the perfect moment to lean into the creative habits that light up the darker months. Calligraphy also makes for thoughtful, personal gifts, so there’s no better time to try your hand at calligraphy ahead of the Christmas period, so you can create something a little different for your loved ones this year.

A few photos from The BIG Type Festival last week in @nationalprintmuseum (first two by Mark Henderson).

I think that on the Sunday they had their highest ever visitor numbers in 30 years 🥳 it was so fun to be there personalising all the beautiful letterpress keepsakes with calligraphy ✍️

I’ll be back in @nationalprintmuseum on the 27th of Sept for a calligraphy workshop (which I do there regularly) so.. if you can’t make this, keep an eye out for the next! It’s such a great team of staff & volunteers at the museum & I’m delighted I get to cross paths with so many when I’m in for workshops 💘

Yesterday @amo_and_pax we had two groups for two calligraphy workshops in the upstairs studio, the sun was shining in & we had great chats & beautiful work was done! 🤍

A sun & hollyhock filled week in North Norfolk, hanging out with @charfaber @wivetonhall & revisiting the @tecsvc which is hanging in all its glory ✨ We had our first swim in the North Sea which almost felt like a bath! The Shell Museum in the village of Glandford in Norfolk. It’s one room & thousands of seashells, also, fossils, birds eggs & pottery. It’s tucked just beside a little church & is so picturesque, well worth a visit. The old handwritten & typed labels all add to the charm 🐚 taken in The Shell Museum by @sarahodea

A tiny snippet from @chatsworthofficial where we stopped on our way to Norfolk. The art collection & objects are incredible, felt like we just scratched the surface. It’s a beautiful setting, the Peak District is scorched from all the sun but still lovely taken in Chatsworth House by @sarahodea
