Recalling the technicolor glow of Diana Baker Smith’s ‘This Place Where They Dwell’ @penrithregionalgallery • May—August 2024 • @dibakersmith •

“Through performance, installation and film, Baker Smith considers the idea of the home and the archive interchangeably, as repositories for the traces of our lived experiences.

‘This Place Where They Dwell’ was performed and filmed in the former home of Gerald and Margo Lewers – a home that has since become a regional gallery through the Lewers Bequest in 1980. Baker Smith examines the home as if it were an artwork or cultural object in an archive, considering its former use and current function as a public gallery. With a sensory approach to colour and light, a wholistic view of Margo Lewers’ life is created, reflecting on her movements, motivations, and existence in a home where she lived for almost three decades.

Engaging dancer Lizzie Thomson and composer Jane Sheldon as collaborators, ‘This Place Where They Dwell’ is a contemplative portrait of Lewers and her home in a time before it was transformed into a public place that it is today.”

When I got lost in ‘Laure Prouvost: Oui Move In You’ @acca_melbourne • March—June 2024 •

“Acknowledging the radical, experimental, and pathfinding figures who came before her, ‘Oui Move In You’ conceptually explores the roles and legacies of grandmother and grandfather, the maternal spaces of mother and child, and contemporary social spaces in which humans commune with the natural world. The exhibition is composed as a celebration of liberation and imagination, the sensual and sensuous, being and belonging, care and connection. Taking audiences on a journey from the subterranean realm of the underground and the subconscious, opening into the bodily and earthly realm exploring sensuality, desire and the fecundity of nature, the exhibition culminates with a release into the sky and celestial plains of weight and weightlessness, lightness and gravity.“

Some of my favourite moments from ‘The same crowd never gathers twice’ last year @buxton_contemporary • Curated by Annika Aitken @annikaaitken • May—Oct 2024

“Arenas are the physical spaces where we come together to witness—and participate in—public life. Figuratively speaking, they embody a multitude of ‘fields’: zones of interest inviting active or competitive engagement. Every arena holds a sense of possibility or uncertain outcome, yet its activities are shaped by specific conditions. Strategically positioned barriers separate spectators from participants. Vantage points delineate roles. Hard structures screen ‘backstage’ areas from public view. Implicit codes, temporal cues and choreographies guide individual interactions and group dynamics. Whether looking on or joining in, we take comfort in knowing the rules.

Spanning moving image, sound, sculptural intervention and performance, ‘The same crowd never gathers twice’ tests the limits of the arena. The artists consider the social and structural architectures that define these spaces, and by extension, the elastic relationship between performance and reality, audience and participant, public and private. Like theatres, sports stadiums and ‘the media’, the art gallery is an arena subject to its own specific conditions. Unfolding over five months, the exhibition invites visitors to consider their own roles, expectations and ways of being inside this space.”

“The title of the exhibition is ‘Wild Grass: Our Lives.’ This is a reference to the Chinese writer Lu Xun’s book Wild Grass (published in 1927). Our society is currently facing many problems such as war, climate change, economic disparity, and intolerance caused by capitalism run amok. The directors invite us to trace the origins of these problems back 100 years to the time of Lu Xun, and together find clues for how to open the way to the future.“

“The impact of humanity on our planet since the industrial revolution, especially in the second half of the 20th century, is said to match that of the thousands of preceding years of geological change. What has turned into an environmental crisis of global scale, in fact, has its origins in countless yet specific local events and situations in industrialized countries around the world, which provides a framework to ‘Our Ecology’.

This exhibition featured four chapters of diverse expression courtesy of an impressive lineup of 34 artists from home and abroad, and about 100 works to total - from historical works to a number commissioned especially for the exhibition. The chapters include: ‘All Is Connected,’ ‘Return to Earth,’ ‘The Great Acceleration,’ and ‘The Future Is within Us’.

The title ‘Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living’ asks who we are, and to whom the Earth’s environment belongs. The exhibition urges us to think about environmental problems and other issues not only from an anthropocentric perspective, but also by looking at the Earth’s multiple ecologies from a broader, more comprehensive standpoint. This sustainable exhibition, designed to reduce the use of transport to a minimum and to reuse and recycle as many resources as possible, will make the Mori Art Museum a place to contemplate how contemporary art and artists have to date engaged with environmental issues, and how they can continue to do so in the future.”
