Inspired by a very challenging last week..

A reminder that the practice isn't all about feeling good but more about just feeling. Learning to be okay with the mess, the ups and downs, the discomfort.

Like so many I found my way to Yoga through the postures. The desire to incorporate more gentle movement into my routine and become more flexible and stronger. Yet, the more I practice and the more I learn, the less the postures actually matter to me.

It would be a lie to say I don't care about making cool shapes with my body (might still be a little too attached and overdo it at times..). Honestly, it's also just fun and incredible how you can teach your body to do new things that feel impossible when you first see them. But it's not WHY I practice Yoga anymore. Or necessarily HOW I practice.

My mind used to always be loud, creating stories that would throw me down deep, dark holes. It's still loud, but I learnt to simply listen. The stories don't feel so real anymore. The holes feel less deep and dark but more like little bumps in the road. Just because I learnt to sit, breathe and do nothing but be present and observe.

Not saying I've got it figured out yet, but I have a whole lifetime to maybe get closer 🌻 by @sarahsunflowr

Advanced Anatomy & Biomechanics for Yoga teachers ✔️

It must have been some time in 2022 when @bellejm_ & I walked out of a Yoga class and talked about how we felt like we never really got good advice from teachers on how to modify our practice with our injuries. We felt like there was a gap in knowledge. So we sat down and started planning. Belle moved overseas 💔 and my notes just sat there for a while.

Fast forward to 2024, I was lucky enough to meet @elliemilbourn during my PhD. Not only a beautiful friend, but incredibly smart and someone I knew I wanted to work with. Wonderful @missgypset gave us the opportunity to take the workshop out of the drawer and run it for the teaching crew at @sasana__studio. It felt like a success but yet there was so much resistance to running it independently because what if no one cares or wants to learn from us?!

Finally, in 2026 after soooo many conversations and words of encouragement from friends and especially my partner @liam.a.murr, I knew we had to make it happen. We found the perfect venue @greenmondaystudios. We decided to run it in 2 parts this time - more time to talk about some general theory first before we dive into the specifics of injuries. A wonderful bunch of teachers came to learn with us and I'm so grateful and impressed with the curiosity and engagement they showed up with! It was amazing!

Putting this out there was scary. I'm not the most experienced or established teacher. I don't know how to do this social media thing and don't have a huge amount of followers. But I knew I had to try because what we put together deserved to be seen.

Grateful to everyone who signed up and supported us! 🫶🏻

Big thank you to my baby sister @mona_sfv for the beautiful photos ❤️ by @sarahsunflowr

A student recently asked me this question after class based on what another movement teacher had said to them.

First, I was really surprised about this question because it is so obvious to me that it's not. Once I started thinking about it, I realised where the question came from. We see people in very flexible bodies creating contorted shapes and might feel like that is the ultimate goal. But forcing our bodies into shapes and flopping in without creating stability will create more harm than good.

So perhaps a little less range, more activation. And consider that it was never about the shapes in the first place.

📣 Melbourne Yoga teachers
Another one for you!

This workshop was born from a conversation between @bellejm_ & me, many moons ago after completing our YTT. Having received pretty unspecific advice ourselves when showing up to Yoga classes with injuries, we realised there is a gap in knowledge.

A few conversations, years, learnings and experiences later I'm so excited to finally close some of these gaps with the support of my wonderful friend @elliemilbourn

📚Part 2: modifying Asana with Injuries

🗓️Saturday, 2nd of May 2pm
