2025 directing recap 2/2 ⛵️

“Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes” by @rjdownes1!
It’s been a while since I tackled a DRAMA drama. The script for L&NR is harrowing and powerful, examining the memory loss and repressed trauma that its protagonist, Donna, copes with as she navigates through merging timelines and shifting spaces. It’s an incredibly clever and complex play, that challenged me creatively to honour the confusion Donna feels, while still making the show clear and coherent to an audience that will (likely) only see it once.

Such a feat can only be achieved with an incredible team by your side; I can’t speak highly enough about my cast and crew. They were so gentle with the story’s content, curious to dig deeper, and excited to share what they learned with our audience.

The biggest lesson I took from this show was that: the heavier the content, the lighter the rehearsal room. We laughed SO much during this production. Trying silly things, spending time getting to know one another as friends, and speaking objectively new sentences into existence (example in last slide). It was such a joyful room, and the love of the team translated beautifully into adding so much heart to the final show.

2025 directing recap 1/2 ✨

I started 2025 with the goal of stepping back into directing, and was so incredibly fortunate to have directed 2(!!) different plays by the end the year.

“Days Since Bo’s Been Gone” written by Miriam Sossin was a fun, sincere, hilarious, and heartbreaking play that made me laugh as often as it made me tear up. Miriam and I spent hours and hours breaking down the story and by the time we got to rehearsals, I feel like every shower, commute, and post-lie down, pre-snooze moment was filled with thoughts of this world and the characters (that began to feel like friends) that inhabited it.

It was such a joy to work on such an ambitious and exciting production, and to work with a cast and crew that was game to try things and play around, and most importantly, to well and truly trust the process. The final show felt so personal and kind, telling a tragic story with care and empathy, and a healthy dose of laughter. Thank you to my fabulous team, I had such a blast on this show 💕

Oh and of course I have to specifically shoutout the incredible Applause and Boo signs created by @zahral21 (the coolest set pieces I’ve ever seen!!) by @sarinisaurus

With summer coming to an end I’m finally reemerging from my post-Fringe hibernation to say a quick thank you to everyone that helped create and/or came to see The Bluffs. This project was a true labour of love, sweat, and tears, and while it was the most challenging thing I’ve done (so far), it was also the most rewarding by a mile. It’s hard to believe that this play started out as a spattering of incoherent, untitled voice notes and somehow evolved into something that nearly 700 people sat to watch (with no snacks or subway surfer to keep their attention!!). Not to mention everyone that shared their thoughts and opinions on the show, or resonated with its story and characters. I’m at a loss for words. What an honour.

And thank you for your kind words and support. It takes a village to raise an artist and I’m endlessly grateful for the incredible community I have by my side. More theatre on the way. Cheers! 🥰🫶🏽🥹💘 by @sarinisaurus

My new gothic drama play THE BLUFFS is premiering at the Toronto Fringe Festival this July 4th to 14th!! We just had our first table read and were assigned our show dates (slide 2!) and guys…😭💕

I’m in LOVE with this team and incredibly grateful they were so game to take on my little queer ghost story.

A lot more gushing to come between now and July so stay tuned for more info on ticket sales and behind the scenes ghoulish behaviour 👻🌊 by @sarinisaurus
