Beautiful People— it’s been a while since I properly introduced myself. I’m often promoting concerts here, but here’s a bit about the person behind the music. My name rhymes with the music form the “aria” :) I was born near Woodstock NY at a Sufi commune. I have family roots in NYC. My dominant ethnic background is Ashkenazi Jewish. I believe that honoring both ancestors & influences is a way to bring greater harmony & justice to the planet; this is something I’ve learned from having many Black American & Cuban mentors, & Chicana friends. I believe all humans deserve human rights. I spent time in both Israel & Palestine. I lived in California, North Carolina, spent long spells working on both experimental theater & music projects in Europe. I’m technically an introvert & get pretty awkward in social environments. I’m a catharsis junky & believe communal catharsis creates healing & justice. I’m a healer & worked for many years as a massage therapist.

I first recorded at age 8 singing in 10 languages on a children’s album in a basement in the Mid-Hudson valley on 2 inch tape. My mom is a classically trained pianist & my first music teacher. She gave me a journal when I was 7 & I’ve been writing poems since. I used to compete in spoken word slams. I taught writing/performance in youth prisons & teen afterschool programs; I still facilitate workshops. Working with youth is a passion. I first taught as a teenager when I was a professional dancer in New York in a modern dance & world folk music/dance company. I still dance every morning, it informs the way I feel music & compose for a full band. My background in flamenco inspires my foot percussion when I perform solo, & the percussion in my guitar playing. In high school I sang jazz & was a crate carrier for a reggae DJ; both genres left their finger prints on my world view & the way a engage music.

I currently make most of my income performing on the street in New Orleans. Offering my authentic expression in public space allows my music to touch people outside of structures of capitalism; I find this meaningful in so many ways. I recently started learning to play clarinet, loving practicing :) 💕

Again— US Citizens, please contact your reps in congress to demand a ceasefire. Our tax dollars fund the Israeli military which means your opinion both matters & bares weight. Supporting a ceasefire is not a sign of support for Hamas, it is a sign of defending human rights. You can look up your reps at ziplook.house.gov …. @jewishvoiceforpeace also has an easy call guide linked in their profile.

On my way to New Orleans….. this has been a particularly intense “homeland” trip with many beautiful moments & dynamic surprises. Thank you everyone who came to a show, shared a meal, a hike, a catch up in a park, who supported me in so many ways to be a touring homecoming artist. I’m looking forward to getting back to my house, my kitty friends, my regular New Orleans gigs, and for Mercury to go direct. 💗 taken in Jfk- John F. TONIGHT!! A night of soulful songs with two deep feeling and complex thinking singer-songwriters, with a dash of humor. Tickets $10-25, no one turned away for lack of funds. Doors 7pm, first set (Buggy) 8pm, second set (Sariyah) 9pm.

BUGGY JIVE is a somewhat reclusive soul rock singer-songwriter quietly uploading music from a basement in Upstate New York. Equal parts Zeppelin and D’Angelo and Prince and Joni in sound and sensibility, his lyrics often mine the literature of the past to make sense of the present – from Ellison to Morrison to Eliot to Didion – delicately balancing the heaviness with humor.

SARIYAH IDAN is an Ulster County raised, New Orleans based, internationally touring singer-songwriter, captivating performer, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and community organizer. Known among New Orleans locals and tourists as “the most hauntingly beautiful voice of the French Quarter streets”. Jazz and folk trained, hip-hop educated, and influenced by Latinx/Caribbean sounds and her Jewish roots, she possesses an “ability to seamlessly combine a wide variety of disparate styles and sonics into a memorable sound all her own,” (Tinnitist). She views honoring traditions of both influences and ancestors as a form of cultural activism. Her lyricism is hailed as “powerful, soulful, spirited songs filled with stories of struggle, love and social justice” (Fusicology). taken in Kingston, New York by @sariyahidan
