$Thank you to everyone who joined us Friday night at the International Museum of Surgical Science for three world premieres! Our program featured Carlos Bandera’s “and from the lake, the brittle waters,” Alexa Rinn’s “Murmuring Diffraction,” and Michael Hersch’s “Philomela Fragments,” with soprano Ah Young Hong. We’re grateful for all the support our project has received, including support from New Music USA’s Creator Fund. Stay tuned for recordings of Carlos and Alexa’s duos. We’ll next perform “Philomela Fragments” with Ah Young Hong on December 5 in Baltimore as part of “The Roaring Tides: Greek Tragedy in Image and Sound.” @sasha.ishov @yagerwill @terns_duo @ahyounghongsop @surgicalmuseumchicago @alexa_e_rinn @carlos.bandera.music @newmusicchicago @newmusicusa by @sasha.ishov$

Flutist @sasha.ishov is a Russian-American performer and researcher whose work expands the flute’s expressive possibilities at the intersection of performance and research. Praised for his “well-sounded and lucid” artistry by the San Diego Union-Tribune, he bridges contemporary and classical traditions through solo and chamber performance, alongside experimental collaborations with technology and new media.

A co-founder of @terns_duo, Sasha has lectured at the University of Florida and UC San Diego.

Bassist @yagerwill is committed to experimental music, improvisation, and collaborating with other artists in the creation of new solo and chamber repertoire for the double bass. His work centers on collaborative approaches to experimental music and the development of new repertoire for the instrument.

A co-founder of @terns_duo, Will is also a founding member of @ligamentduo and the experimental trio @wombattrio. He is currently on faculty at the University of Northern Iowa.

Soprano @ahyounghongsop has been described as “transfixing” by The New Yorker and “absolutely riveting” by the Chicago Tribune. Her repertoire ranges from early music to leading composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, and she is a longtime exponent of Michael Hersch’s music.

Hong has premiered major works including 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘦𝘢, and by @sasha.ishov

Some 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀! 🐊

I’m excited to be teaching the flute studio at the University of Florida this semester while Dr. Kristen Stoner is on sabbatical. I studied flute with Kristen in middle school and early high school after moving to Gainesville from Philly at age ten and beginning my musical life here (technically, I am a Florida man…).

It feels surreal and special to return almost exactly fifteen years after I left Gainesville for Interlochen, followed by Eastman, New York, San Diego, and now Chicago. I never imagined I would come back to teach flute and spend this time with my mom and dad.

I’ll be traveling between Florida and Chicago throughout the semester, with three special Chicago performances I’d love to invite you to:

𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟭𝟭 György Kurtág Festival at @constellationchicago
Performing with @jahannau and @yagerwill on a program also featuring @myrahinrichs, @ilanawaniuk, @galatdan, and @kelly.quesada

𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟭𝟲 @terns_duo with @ahyounghongsop at @surgicalmuseumchicago
World premieres by Michael Hersch, @alexa_e_rinn, @carlos.bandera.music

𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟮𝟱–𝟮𝟲 Shulamit Ran’s Moon Songs at @guarnerihall
Performing with @kaybeesoprano, @alexanderhersh, and @winstonchoipiano

Chicago friends, I hope to see you at one of these concerts. I’ll be back full-time in December and am already looking forward to a busy 2027.

I love how Álvarez creates the illusion of several musical layers unfolding at once. Inspired by Francisco Goya’s etching Lluvia de toros (“Rain of Bulls”), the piece opens with a double timbral trill that requires circular breathing. The trill moves up and down through harmonics while sharply articulated interjections cut through, making the flute sound like several simultaneous voices.
