‘The successful completion of such a beautiful space demonstrates the value of rooting an architectural commission in process rather than product,’ writes Emily Conklin (@conk_shell) on the Tekαkαpimək Contact Station in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine, designed by @saundersarchitecture and @reedhilderbrand.

The tribes known as the Wabanaki Confederacy have long stewarded the rivers of northern Maine, a practice that was impacted by industrial logging in the 19th century. As the landscape has recovered from the logging, Mainers are still working towards ‘land back’ reparations for these tribal communities. Philanthropist Roxanne Quimby bought land in the region ‘with the aim of preserving it for posterity’ which eventually was designated a US National Monument. This ‘ensures that 35,000 hectares of Wabanaki ancestral homeland remain protected from commercial development, while accommodating the Wabanaki’s nomadic way of life.’

The structure serves as a welcome centre dedicated to telling the story of the Wabanaki people and their ancestral homeland and preserving the beauty of the land. Tekαkαpimək translates as ‘as far as one can see’ reflecting the Wabanaki orientation towards the dawn lands and their cosmological relationship to place.

All Wabanaki Cultural Knowledge and Intellectual Property shared within this project is owned by the Wabanaki Nations.

Architecture Hunter Awards 2025 Shortlisted Project

Tekαkαpimək Contact Station is a 734 m² interpretive space located within the traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, welcoming visitors to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in northern Maine. Developed in close collaboration with the U.S. National Park Service and informed by the Indigenous knowledge of the Wabanaki Nations, the project integrates cultural narratives, languages, ancestral references, and native materials rooted in the surrounding lands and waters. Conceived as a gift by Roxanne Quimby and the Elliotsville Foundations and designed by Saunders Architecture, the building responds sensitively to the site’s challenging terrain while reimagining relationships between people, culture, and nature. Shaped through cross-cultural collaboration and a locally based workforce, Tekαkαpimək stands as a collective expression of respect, balance, and shared stewardship of the landscape.

In the present and traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, Tekαkαpimək Contact Station is a stunning 734 m2 interpretive environment welcoming the global public to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in northern Maine. In consultation with the U.S. National Park Service, Tekαkαpimək (Dah-gaga-bee-mok), Penobscot for “as far as one can see”, is imbued with Indigenous knowledges from the Wabanaki Nations: Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Mi’kmaq Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe – Sipayik and Motahkomikuk, and Penobscot Nation. It intentionally incorporates cultural narratives, languages, images, kinship relations, ancestral representations, contemporary practices, and native materials of these lands and waters. The project was conceived as a gift by Maine-based Roxanne Quimby and Elliotsville Foundation.

Villa S,
designed by @saundersarchitecture for his own family, balances nature, weather, and daily life. Resting on slender pillars, the spruce-clad house stretches across the site to capture garden views and create sheltered outdoor spaces. Inside, the main floor brings together living areas and bedrooms around a spacious kitchen and dining area. Above, a quiet library on the upper level feels like a treehouse retreat — a place of calm and reflection.
