Utsiktspunkt Stegastein Det må ha vært i 2002. Vi kalte oss Saunders & Wilhelmsen AS. Andre kalte oss Todd & Tommie. A little less conversation, a little more action.» Glory days, Toddy! 🤛 May you stay forever young. #norskarkitektur #architecture #Saunders & Wilhelmsen

We had the unforgettable pleasure of spending three days on Fogo Island as part of Shore Time, an intimate gathering of artists, architects and designers exploring the meaning of place and how we situate ourselves in relation to global economies and the natural environment. Our deepest gratitude to Zita Cobb, Fogo Island Arts and the Shorefast Foundation for creating such a thoughtful and generous experience, rich with shared ideas, long walks and late-night meals. A truly memorable time in a remarkable place.

TS and TS ~ Catching up with Todd Saunders at The Long Studio and his Schoolhouse project on Fogo Island. He’s restoring the schoolhouse himself. When I visited the site he was moving lumber. Just working away on the structure using his own hands and a knowledge of how buildings work and move people that has made him one of the most sought after minds in contemporary architecture. He has built a small house on the shores of Barr’d Islands. Inside there’s an antique table in the kitchen. There are a couple of kayaks out front. If you look out the window, you can see The Inn across the ink-blue inlet atop the rock and scrub. It’s a perfect house. I think that the hearts desire of every person is a perfect house, and I think the pursuit of that wish is a noble one. It’s good to remember that. Thanks for the time and talk and the good laughs. @saundersarchitecture

Fogo Food ~ Food at Fogo Island Inn is at once a fun-filled foray into foraging and freshness and serious business. There’s a deep respect for the sourcing as well as the preparation and presentation of local food resources. History and hospitality are the foundation, storytelling and community provide the vibe. All of this, under the roof of Todd Saunders’ brilliant buildings, and in the care of the Inn’s incredible staff and community hosts. It’s delicious in all ways. (A million thank-yous to my friend Stephan Weishaupt and @manofparts for this unforgettable evening)

Shore Time: Art Design Place   Our final day of Shore Time was a fitting culmination of three days spent sharing stimulating ideas and learning about the ways makers think about creating in relation to time, history and place.     We started the day with Zita Cobb and Todd Saunders (@saundersarchitecture), the architect who designed @fogoislandinn and the four Fogo Island Arts’ artist studios. They considered how to build for time and place: what must stay the same, and what must change for the Inn to still matter in 100 years. A panel discussion with all our participants followed, reflecting on our last three days together.   Participants visited studios in the afternoon and joined another guided hike, tour, or excursion, before reconvening at the Orange Lodge for farewell tea and cake.     Our last day came to a close with a gathering at @j.k.contemporary, where we shared the experience of Shore Time, surrounded by the work of former FIA artist Teresa Baker (@tttttbaker).     Thank you to everyone who helped bring Shore Time to life.   📸 @tomcochrane (1, 2, 6, 8-11) ; @jason_normore (3, 5, 7)

A cedar shake roof, locally sourced rough sawn siding and 12 over 16 historic wood windows. This building is simple in design but it makes you feel something. We’re excited to see what it inspires in its next life. #historic #renovation #fogoisland
