Thank you to everyone who attended our Spring Green Campus Open House this past weekend! The beautiful weather, farm tours, live music, perennial food & beverages, natural tie-dye, and community vendors and displays made for a great end-of-season celebration. Our partner farms, collaborators, and demonstration farm team have made this a successful and fulfilling event season, and we are grateful for all of their effort and cooperation. Thank you to our sponsors and supporters who made it possible for us to host the Open House free of charge to attendees! by @savannainstitute

Agroforestry educator MJ Oviatt talks about how windbreaks can provide wildlife habitat, with aerial views of Fields Restored farm in northern Illinois. The multi-row #windbreak at this farm utilizes hybrid poplar, evergreen species, and hybrid hazelnuts to provide shelter from the wind as well as habitat for wildlife. taken in Oregon, Illinois by @savannainstitute

This past weekend, we gathered at Savanna Institute in Spring Green, Wisconsin, to celebrate Mad Agriculture’s Wilding program and a shared vision for a more connected, biodiverse Driftless landscape.

Farmers, conservationists, brands, land stewards, and partners from across the country gathered to walk the land and share a locally sourced dinner by Leah Spicer featuring food from Savanna Institute, Blakesville Creamery, Cates Family Farm, Steadfast Acres, American Wine Project, Meadowlark Community Mill, Uplands Cheese, and Driftless Gold, followed by dessert from Erin Crooks Lynch and live music from The Iowans.

Mad Agriculture’s Elizabeth Candelario facilitated a conversation with Mad Agriculture Wilding Director Omar de Kok-Mercado, Meadowlark Organics farmer and co-owner Halee Wepking, MegaFood Director of Sustainability and Social Impact Stacia Betley, and Rich Henderson of The Prairie Enthusiasts’.

Wilding begins here, in the margins and connections between farms, waterways, habitat, and communities. The larger vision is the Wild Grid: 65 million acres of thriving, biodiverse, interconnected corridors across the United States over the next 50 years.

Thank you to everyone who gathered with us to share food, ideas, music, and a vision for what this landscape can become. It begins in the margins.

Many Midwest landowners are motivated to establish agroforestry by their desire for more wildlife habitat and better hunting opportunities. Julie Hager, an Agroforestry & Grazing Specialist at the Savanna Institute, also has experience as a private consultant who works with landowners to enhance their deer habitat. Julie introduces her idea of a "Buck Buffer" and shares other recommendations for using agroforestry to improve whitetail deer hunting opportunities in a new video on our YouTube channel. by @savannainstitute

Riparian buffers don’t take up much space, but they do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to reducing soil loss and improving water quality. At this riparian buffer at Fields Restored, an agroforestry demonstration farm in northern Illinois, the land isn’t even taken out of production — it’s just a different type of production. Plants grown in this riparian buffer include pawpaws, elderberries, persimmons, pecans, and plants that can be harvested for cut flowers. This is a perfect example of how multifunctional #agroforestry allows us to do more while also achieving conservation goals! taken in Oregon, Illinois by @savannainstitute

At the Memorial 4H Camp Agroforestry Demonstration Farm near Monticello, Illinois, we’ve used two different types of groundcover in our alley cropping plantings: a low-mow, cool-season forage mix and a shortgrass prairie mix. The trees seem to be growing more slowly with the prairie groundcover, but this groundcover type also seems to have more plant and animal diversity.

We will be publishing detailed reports for each of our three Illinois #agroforestry demonstration farms in the next few months! taken in Allerton Park and Retreat Center by @savannainstitute
