What a beautiful weekend in Driftless, Wisconsin, my old stomping grounds! I came to bring some large format paintings home to Nashville, TN. They were graciously housed by @savannainstitute Elderflower Retreat during my transition to the South. They are a fantastic regenerative farming organization dedicated to land quality. Onward and upward for "Summer" and "Autumn" from The Four Seasons series inspired by the beauty of the Northwoods. Does your wall need art? I have some!

This past weekend, we gathered at Savanna Institute in Spring Green, Wisconsin, to celebrate Mad Agriculture’s Wilding program and a shared vision for a more connected, biodiverse Driftless landscape. Farmers, conservationists, brands, land stewards, and partners from across the country gathered to walk the land and share a locally sourced dinner by Leah Spicer featuring food from Savanna Institute, Blakesville Creamery, Cates Family Farm, Steadfast Acres, American Wine Project, Meadowlark Community Mill, Uplands Cheese, and Driftless Gold, followed by dessert from Erin Crooks Lynch and live music from The Iowans. Mad Agriculture’s Elizabeth Candelario facilitated a conversation with Mad Agriculture Wilding Director Omar de Kok-Mercado, Meadowlark Organics farmer and co-owner Halee Wepking, MegaFood Director of Sustainability and Social Impact Stacia Betley, and Rich Henderson of The Prairie Enthusiasts’. Wilding begins here, in the margins and connections between farms, waterways, habitat, and communities. The larger vision is the Wild Grid: 65 million acres of thriving, biodiverse, interconnected corridors across the United States over the next 50 years. Thank you to everyone who gathered with us to share food, ideas, music, and a vision for what this landscape can become. It begins in the margins. Photos by Zack Whitford

My latest edition of @bbcfoodprog is about innovations and ideas contributing to food systems change. They range from a farming system cultivating climate friendly rice to a fermented yeast that produces an edible oil and, as an alternative to expanding palm plantations, can help prevent deforestation. These innovations are being recognised by judges in two high-profile awards, this year’s BBC Food and Farming Awards and Sweden’s @foodplanetprize Each idea has the potential to make a positive impact on the future of food. Other innovations featured in these awards (and the programme) include a rethink on how we buy fish and the species we get to eat @sole_of_discretion - efforts in the American mid-west to integrate more trees into farms @savannainstitute - a project that’s removing barriers to people cooking @bags_of_taste - and the world’s biggest transition to Agroecology in the form of India’s @apcnf_ryss # Please try and listen. I think these ideas provide a much needed source of optimism. #food #farming #agriculture #foodsystems climat APCNF photo Benny Haerlin

🌟Sponsor Spotlight! Put your hands together 👏👏 for our next round of incredible sponsors for our 5th Annual Farm-ily Reunion! We couldn’t put all this together without their passion and support for our farmers and local food system. Be sure to check out their socials/websites to learn more about them! Illinois Environmental Council @ilenviro https://ilenviro.org/ IEC works to safeguard Illinois—its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends by building power for people and the environment. The Illinois Environmental Council (IEC) was created in 1975 to ensure that the collective voice of Illinois’ environmental community was amplified in public policy debates and legislative action. Today, IEC is proud to be leading the strongest, most effective environmental community in the state’s history. Elewa Farm Foundation @elawafarm https://www.elawafarm.org/ Our mission is to steward a historic farm that enriches the greater Lake County community as a center for experiential learning to broaden access to education, nutritious food, and our local food system. Savanna Institute https://www.savannainstitute.org/ @savannainstitute Inspired by the oak savannas native to the region, the Savanna Institute supports the growth of more diverse, perennial farming in the Upper Mississippi and Great Lakes watersheds. We work to create opportunities for farmers integrating trees with crops and pastures to diversify their incomes and landscapes, raise healthy food, and make their local communities more resilient. The Savanna Institute grew out of a grassroots gathering of Midwestern farmers, graduate students, and community members interested in ecological agriculture. Together, around a table on a farm in central Illinois, the volunteer group started building a network and a nonprofit organization to support perennial farmers in the region. Last week to get your tickets for Farm-ily! Head to the link in the bio to save your seat, our carpool sheet just went out if you need to collaborate transportation! 😍

@savannainstitute has several farms, this one is a research area. I start out front and show the farm but also pan across the street to a nature preserve, which is not part of their work. The welcome table had Elderberry juice - a great start!

Join us at our Wilding Community Celebration in Wisconsin on October 3! Mad Agriculture and Savanna Institute invite you to an evening of food, music, and camaraderie at Savanna Institute's North Farm. This gathering is to celebrate the farmers, technical partners, food companies, conservation leaders, and neighbors helping get the pilot off the ground. Wilding is a regenerative agriculture framework that integrates native perennials, prairie corridors, and riparian buffers into working farmland, rebuilding the biodiversity, water quality, and soil health that food production depends on. We're launching this work in a three year pilot across the Driftless, laying the groundwork for the Wild Grid: a 50-year vision to establish 65 million acres of ecological corridors through U.S. agricultural landscapes. Link in Bio to RSVP! 2:00–4:30 PM | Wilding Farm Tour (optional) Join Savanna Institute's Erik Hagen for a guided walk through North Farm: a firsthand look at how native perennials, prairie corridors, riparian buffers, and other Wilding practices are being integrated into working agricultural land. 5:00–6:00 PM | Welcome & Wilding Round Table Hear from our Wilding partners: farmers, technical advisors, and local conservation leaders on the pilot details and the vision for the Wild Grid. 6:00–10:00 PM | Dinner, Music & Bonfire A farm-to-table dinner prepared by Reunion Restaurant, featuring locally sourced ingredients. Drinks include Kernza® beer from Deschutes, specialty cocktails from Perennial Spirits, and wine from Bonterra.
