Why Volunteer at Save Cantonese?

Ryan Talvola, Campaign Executive at #SaveCantonese (and #ucla grad), wrote this moving piece reflecting on his reasons for joining our movement...

"In May 2021, 84-year-old Jean Chang Kan Fung passed away after California Highway Patrol officers dropped her off at the wrong location, miles from her home, because they did not speak Cantonese. Alan Wong, former City College of San Francisco Board President, recalls stepping in to interpret for a woman with a “big purple eye” at the hospital. It was a stroke of fate he was there, else she would have not received the necessary care,"

"Many volunteers say their biggest regret is that they did not learn Cantonese to speak with their grandparents before they passed; many others sing Cantonese opera and write Cantonese plays, seeing Cantonese not only as something alive but as something whose vitality should be spread with good cheer. We even have some volunteers who continue the mission so that their young children will come of age in a world where the language is not under threat."

"We learn languages so we can understand others in their most vulnerable moments, an empathy we lose when we do not support language education.”

If you’ve ever wondered where to find Cantonese classes, look no further! There is finally a hub to find Cantonese programs!

We’ve been developing this map where you can find Cantonese programs around the world. The first country we’re launching is the US and there are more countries to come! Here’s how it works:

1. Visit savecantonese.org/map

2. Filter by program type: K-12, College/University, Adult classes

3. Find a program near you

4. Learn more at the website listed in the table below the map

On our map, you can explore different Cantonese programs, and you can check all of them at savecantonese.org/map

🌟 Meet Maggie Li! 🌟

We’re excited to welcome Maggie as our Social Media & Civic Engagement Intern this year! 💛

Maggie is a UC Santa Cruz student studying Global & Community Health and Sociology, with deep roots in San Francisco’s Chinatown community.

From growing up and attending school in Chinatown, to volunteering with Adopt-An-Alleyway in high school, and now working with Chinatown Alleyway Tours, Maggie has continued to find meaningful ways to connect with and give back to the community.

We’re so excited to have her on the team and can’t wait to see all the ways she’ll help share Chinatown’s history, culture, stories, and community voices with others! 🏮✨

Welcome, Maggie !

The Faces Behind Our History: Joe Shoong 周崧

Who was Joe Shoong?

Joe Shoong (1879 – 1961) was one of the founders of our Center in 1953 and one of the first Chinese American millionaires. But perhaps most importantly, he was a great philanthropist who gave back to his community.

Now we get to honor Joe Shoong, his wife Rose and his son Milton for all they did to help found our Center in 1953. Back then it was known as Chinese Community Center. Today we call it Shoong Family Chinese Cultural Center.

If you ask elders with deep roots in Oakland Chinatown, you’ll find that many of them either worked at Joe Shoong’s National Dollar Stores or their children learned Chinese at our Center. Do you have a connection to Joe Shoong? Did you or someone in your family shop at National Dollar Stores or attend classes at our Center? We’d love to hear your story in the comments.

We thank our lead artist @tsui.xiaorui of @abgprojects and the amazing Johara, for bringing details to Joe Shoong’s portrait. Thank you @calartscouncil and @oaklandchinatownchamber for your support in making this mural possible. This is an important piece of history honoring leaders in the Cantonese community who helped to build our institutions in the Bay Area. @savecantonese @savecantonese_ccsf @savecantonese_sfsu

Come by this week and you can catch a glimpse of the mural in progress! #oaklandchinatown #shoongccc #bilingualeducation #aapi #cantonese taken in Shoong Cultural Center by @savecantonese

This quarter, our spotlight is Save Cantonese — an international movement that sustains and celebrates Cantonese language and culture.

Cantonese carries generations of story, family, and identity. Save Cantonese protects the local language programs that teach it, strengthens ties across the global Cantonese diaspora, and works to make sure present and future generations grow up in a thriving, living community.

That’s exactly the kind of grassroots work AAPI Empower Hour exists to spotlight. Every quarter, we bring Bay Area professionals into the room with AAPI nonprofits — to learn, and to find real ways in as volunteers and board members.

On August 13, Save Cantonese has the floor. It’s also a milestone for us: 2 years of doing this work.

📍 Victory Hall & Parlor, SF — Filipino woman-owned
🗓️ Thursday, August 13 — 5:30 to 7:30PM
🎟️ RSVP at the link in our bio

Come meet the movement and find your way in.
