MOTT INSIGHTS II

You enjoy the drinks. But have you ever thought about the business behind every bottle served at an event? 🥂

For this edition of MOTT INSIGHTS, we sat with Taiwo Jones of @drinks_taste to explore the business behind beverage services in the events industry.

And let’s just say, there’s a lot more to it than chilling bottles and serving drinks.

Who pays when a bottle or glass gets damaged? How do you protect expensive drinks from going missing? When should you offer a discount, and how do you ensure that a gesture of goodwill doesn’t become a financial loss?

What happens when your team has to arrive hours before the event begins? And how do you account for those additional costs without compromising the quality of your service?

These are the kinds of questions that reveal the difference between delivering a service and running a sustainable business.

In our conversation, Taiwo shares lessons from his entrepreneurial journey, including how a complimentary service helped him gain more than four steady clients, why an undocumented discount nearly cost him a client relationship, and the systems Drinks and Taste uses to protect both its clients and its reputation.

His story is a reminder that every business decision has financial implications, even the ones that seem insignificant.

A discount can open doors, but it must be strategic. Great service can keep clients coming back, but you must understand your costs to remain profitable. And the little details you account for today can determine the sustainability of your business tomorrow.

Whether you’re in beverage services, event planning, decor, photography or any other creative business, there’s something to learn from this conversation.

Swipe through the highlights, read Taiwo’s full interview, and consider what these lessons mean for the way you run your own business.

Because the goal isn’t just to deliver an excellent service. It’s to build a business that can keep delivering it.

Sometimes, we are so focused on where we want to be that we don’t pay enough attention to what it will take to get there.

I think about my journey building DWS Events. I was doing the work, solving problems, making money and enjoying the process of building something I loved.

But I wasn’t paying enough attention to the business principles that would help me structure it properly.

I had to learn that doing the work and building a business around the work are two different things.

That’s part of the story behind Money on the Table.

It’s one thing to have a skill. It’s another thing to understand how to build a sustainable business from that skill.

So yes,
have the vision…. Know your destination…. Set the targets.

But don’t become so obsessed with the outcome that you neglect the process.

If you’re on a journey right now, what part of the process do you think you need to pay more attention to?

Fall in love with your process. The destination is just a consequence.

Like, follow, save and share this with someone who needs the reminder.

MOTT INSIGHTS I

Every event leaves memories. But what if you could keep the voices, messages, laughter and heartfelt wishes of the people who made the day special? 🥹❤️

That’s what Bami and The Memory Haven help you do through interactive guest experiences like telephone guestbooks and video booths, turning moments at your event into keepsakes you can revisit long after the celebration is over.

But today, we’re looking beyond the beautiful memories to the business behind them.

We sat with Bami to talk about money, business decisions, and the realities of running an event experience brand.

From clients who offer exposure instead of payment to the challenge of collecting outstanding balances after an event, Bami shares lessons that many creative entrepreneurs will find familiar.

Her story is a reminder that building a business takes more than a great product or service. It takes systems, boundaries, strategic decisions and the courage to recognise when a particular stage of your business journey has passed.

Because when we talk about the event industry being a money-making industry, do we really understand what it takes to make that money, protect it and build a sustainable business?

Swipe through for highlights from our conversation with Bami, and read the full interview to discover more about her journey, her brand and the lessons she has learnt along the way.

Money on the Table: The Business Behind the Skill.

Because your skill may open the door, but understanding the business behind it helps you build something that lasts.

I really tried to watch My 30th Wedding like a normal person, but my event planner brain said NOPE.

@bimboademoye ma are you sure you don’t own an event planning brand aside movie production?? 🤭🤭

I was watching Elamosi and taking mental notes.

From how well put together she was on the job, to the way she communicated with her team, handled clients, stayed structured, paid attention to details and still kept her professionalism even when things got personal…

I was watching as an event professional.

One thing the movie reminded me of is that being an event planner is so much more than knowing how to plan a beautiful event.

It’s also about leadership, communication, client management, structure, problem-solving, experience design, financial understanding and knowing how to run the BUSINESS behind the events.

And honestly, this is one area I think we need to keep talking about as an industry.

We need to keep learning.

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in the industry for years, there is always something new to learn, unlearn and improve on.

This is also why I’m excited about @schoolofevents

If you’re looking to upskill as an event professional, deepen your knowledge of the industry and understand not just the event side but also the business side of events, I definitely think you should check them out.

And no, it’s not just for beginners.

There are courses designed to help beginners, intermediate and advanced event professionals sharpen their skills and become better at what they do.

Because I genuinely believe we need more event professionals who don’t just say:

“I love events.”

but can confidently say:

“I understand events. I understand the business. And I know how to deliver.”

So, if you’re in the events industry and you’re ready to take your knowledge up a notch…

School of Events Africa is worth checking out.

Now, back to the movie…
