(Sound on) My dad left me this voicemail on the day Violet was born, and I’ve probably listened to it 100 times since then. His terrible attempt at a dad-joke at the start always makes me smile 😂.

It’s a nice reminder to keep going and to cherish the moments we have together.

Happy Father’s Day to all the new Dads, established Dads, and to the Dads who are no longer with us.

It’s the first Christmas without you. Honestly, it still doesn’t feel real. It feels like you’re just away on business or something. My brain won’t allow me to accept that this is our new normal. Everyday, I think about the last day I saw you. I think about the last time I heard your laugh, the last time we hugged, the last time you said “I love you back”. I look at Violet and wonder if she’ll remember you. If she’ll remember smiling and laughing every time she saw Papa on FaceTime. Will she remember your smile?

Grief is so strange. There are no instructions for this, and no template on how to feel. One minute you’re in the moment, and the next you are right back to that day when we said goodbye. Grief can be consuming and unending.

Cancer is a thief of time. It robs you of life. It robs your loved ones of memories. However, I choose to remember you differently. I choose to remember your ever present smile, boisterous laugh, and your ability to make conversation with just about anybody, even if it annoyed us as kids 🤦🏾‍♂️ 😂

You are my hero, my favorite golfing partner, inspiration, and role model. I love you, Dad. I’ll forever be grateful for your love and the influence you’ve had on my life. by @savilebro
