How it started ➡️ How it’s going 💜🗳️

Two years ago, I brought Violet with me to vote in the presidential primary and thought to myself, “Hmm…this could be a children’s book.”

And now, two years later, VIOLET GOES VOTING is officially out in the world! I love all of my book babies, but this one holds a special place in my heart.

Growing up, my parents took my younger sister and me with them when they voted. They made sure we understood that people who looked like us didn’t always had the right to vote and that exercising that right mattered. Those trips to the polls helped inspire a lifetime of civic engagement for both of us.

Because we learn how to vote long before we ever cast our first ballot.

VIOLET GOES VOTING, illustrated by the incredible @alleannaharris and published by @randomhousekids, is available TODAY wherever books are sold. I hope it helps families start conversations about voting, Black history, civic engagement, and the generations who fought to make our voices heard. ✊🏾

is it still kinda chic to do this trend? 👀

Since opening last September (hard to believe we’re coming up one year!), we’ve had the pleasure of hosting numerous community events, author talks, book signings and more all in the name of Black feminism, Black families, Black (woman-owned) businesses and Black joy!

We love it here 🥰

Can you believe it’s been one month since we officially opened our doors?! 🥳🎉

The journey to Zora’s Place has been one heck of a rollercoaster—full of faith, community, and so much love. 💜

Thank you for helping us write this beautiful first chapter. Here’s to all the stories, connections, and magic still to come. ✨

September, you were so good to me. In October, I want to see just how good it can get. 🥰

We had a TIME last week at our grand opening! 🥳🎉📚

From the music and live poetry from @unapologeticallypam and @demicodavis to the Black romance novel and Black woman-owned wine pairing hosted by @bychasitycooper, last Saturday was one for the books (pun very much intended)!

We look forward to welcoming you into the space & creating even more memories. See you soon! 🫶🏾

Life lately 😮‍💨

I’ve been deep in what I’m lovingly referring to as a “bookstore bubble” in preparation for the (soft) opening of @zorasplace THIS Saturday, Sept. 6 (eek!).

Thankfully I haven’t had to do it alone. Shoutout to @savilebro for keeping me sane, Violet for being our project manager, my aunt for flying in to help and all of our loved ones who’ve supported from near and far…not to mention the 100+ of you who contributed to our crowdfunding campaign and helped us raise more than $11k to get this store up & running.

To @ttwcoach of @theauxwellnesscollective for seeing the vision and giving us a home for the next six months (if not longer 👀).

To @blktinabelcher of @grandgesturebooks and @busyblackbookworm of @callandresponsechi for being the first to talk me through the ups & downs of being a Black woman-owned bookstore.

To Jordan at @threeavenuesbookshop for answering all of my panicked texts (and I assure you there have been many!!).

To @eve.ewing for graciously meeting with me at @buildcoffeeandbooks to talk some (much needed) sense into me.

And to everyone who’s liked/shared a post/story or followed us online, your support (and engagement) means the world.

To the media outlets who’ve covered us so far, especially @ceeceecee1 at @evanstonroundtable for being the first to write about us, thank you for spreading the word.

And to the little Black girl who never could have imagined she’d be an author, let alone a bookstore owner…dreams do come true! 💜

Another Payton Family Fun day in the books! 🥰📚 See what I did there? 👀

Growing up, I was a library kid (who am I kidding? I still am!), so it’s fun to share the love of libraries and the love of reading with Violet. And @schaumlib did NOT disappoint!

I even found a copy of my book, Stop Waiting for Perfect! 📕 Have you read (or listened) to it yet?
