Prelim. The ending to yesterday’s incredible, ALL-TIME, preliminary final was an absolute disgrace.

And no, the above is in no way a commentary on anything that transpired within the field of play. I am talking about the conduct of far too many Hawthorn supporters.

Yesterday, a grown, middle-aged man threw a bucket of nachos at a mother and her child, in what should have been a memorable day for them for all of the right reasons.

Instead, because this man’s sportzball team lost, he’s left a young family traumatised. Who knows what relationship, if any, they’ll now have with a sport that’s meant to be a source of joy.

Let me be clear, just because you buy a ticket, it does not give you the right to conduct yourself like a toddler if a result does not go your way.

Beyond the incident described above, there were hundreds of others where “fans” were throwing projectiles from elevated vantage points, conduct which so easily could have resulted in serious injury.

I’m a massive Hawthorn supporter and have been all my life. Yesterday’s match was an all-time classic, but it’s a struggle to think about that right now, as I am so deeply uncomfortable with what transpired post the final siren.

And if people are willing to conduct themselves like this with literally 97,000 witnesses, imagine what is happening in private.

In Australia, it is a statistical fact that we see spikes in family & domestic violence at times which align with major sporting events.

If you want to learn more about this, I encourage you to check out the work of ‘Our Watch’.

I hope they’re given every possible platform this week in the lead-up to the AFL Grand Final to highlight these issues.

We have a problematic relationship with sport in this country, and there is no beating around the bush: this is a men’s issue and it needs to be acknowledged.

Because for as long as there are people in comment sections saying, “umpire better and this wouldn’t be an issue”, we’re not going to change the culture.

It shouldn't take allegations against elite athletes to bring conversations about gendered and sexual violence into the national conversation.

But we're here now.

And it's important that we get this right. Because what we do with an engaged audience matters.

It can shape perspectives.

For as long as most of us can remember, we've been told to dismiss certain behaviours on the basis of gender.

"Boys will be boys."

But then, when that behaviour crosses a largely undefined line, suddenly the response becomes:

"Not all men."

Harm on the scale of what has been alleged this week doesn't happen in a vacuum.

It starts with the attitudes we normalise.
The behaviours we dismiss.
The jokes we make, laugh at or excuse.
And I absolutely haven't always gotten this right. I've ignorantly been part of the problem.

But I'm determined to be part of the solution.
And that's a solution all men have a role to play in.
Because if we genuinely want to prevent gendered violence, we have to be willing to challenge what happens before it occurs.

The attitudes.
The behaviours.
The culture that serves to excuse it.

Women are disproportionately impacted by this harm.
But they shouldn't have to carry the responsibility for changing the culture that contributes to it. by @sayfejacob
