seven years is a pretty long time to keep doing anything on purpose, but here we are and this year we’re gathering under the Blue Umbrella.

it has been an especially strange season out here. the rains come as they please, the Rio minds her own business, the mountains declined to budge yet another year, while old men with maps and money keep arriving with big ideas about how to box the desert in.

they have apparently determined that the cure for all this wild open country is a wall.

we remain unconvinced.

there are already plenty of walls in the world and precious few places where you can stand beneath a sky this big and remember how ridiculous our human arrangements are. the Big Bend has been getting along for several million years without our architectural advice. seems presumptuous to start giving it now.

John Prine understood a thing or two about people getting carried away with themselves. he also understood rain, rivers, fools, paradise, loneliness, spite, love, getting old, getting even, getting drunk, and the peculiar comfort of standing beneath a blue umbrella while the whole damn world carries on around you.

so that’s what we’re gonna do.

October 10th, 2026 (handsome Johnny’s would be birthday), come out to M’rthn for the 7th Annual John Prine Night at @thefrenchcomarathon.

bring a guitar if you’ve got one. borrow one if you don’t. pick a Prine song and come sing it. bring your sweetheart, your ex-sweetheart, your dog, your mother, a stranger you met at the gas pump, or anybody else with enough sense to know a good song when they hear one.

we’ll have supper. we’ll have music. we’ll tell stories of questionable provenance. @schmeeglez will once again attempt to maintain something resembling order, despite six years of evidence suggesting this is beyond his abilities.

and for one evening anyway, we’ll sit together beneath the blue umbrella while the Rio runs where it damn well pleases, and the mountains refuse every improvement offered them.

A whole year goes into this one night, and afterward we never quite what to say. How does one describe magic? ✨

There are so many people to thank. So many hands in it. And none of it would exist without the town of Marathon welcoming everyone so freely, making room for people who arrive as strangers and leave with friends to come back to.

Somewhere in the middle of all that are @stavxyz and @schmeeglez, hashing out absolutely insane ideas and laughing at the absurd hurdles that seem to arrive new and fascinatingly dumb each year. You would think we’d have encountered them all by now, but they hit us in the head without warning. There is a lot of messy, ridiculous, unseen work in the months between. This thing wouldn’t happen without that silly work (the same thing we’ve been doing since we started planning events together in college), or the friendship that makes it possible to keep doing it.

Then everyone arrives, and we get to spend a little time together with these songs we love. After thinking about it all year, it’s hard to believe how quickly the night goes.

Thank you to everyone who helped, played, showed up, and made someone new feel welcome. We love you. We hope you’ll keep coming back in the years ahead, and that each time it feels more like the family reunion it is.

Life with a two-year-old is rarely quiet or especially glamorous, but there is no one I would rather be doing it with than @eple.eple. You’re an incredible partner and mother. You bring so much intelligence, humor, care, and strength to our family, and we are very lucky to have you.
