Then the room changes.

A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know is an immersive theatrical experience at Tampa Fringe Festival, written and produced by Steve Diasio and The School of Creativity and Innovation.

It is part funeral.
Part reception.
Part ritual.
Part mirror.

This is not a play you simply watch. It is a room you enter. A role you accept. A silence you help complete.

Or someone you might be.

A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know is not a traditional play.

It is an immersive theatrical experience.
A live ritual.
A strange memorial.
A room full of strangers asked us to notice what we usually ignore.

When you arrive, you sign the guest book.
You choose how you knew him.
Neighbor. Coworker. Karaoke colleague. Stranger.

Then the service begins.

Some people will read.
Some will witness.
Everyone becomes part of the room.

This is for anyone who has ever felt invisible in a crowd.
For anyone who has passed someone every day and never asked their name.
For anyone who knows that loneliness does not always look lonely.

Produced by Steve Diasio and the award-winning School of Creativity and Innovation, this immersive experience blends theater, ritual, audience participation, and human-centered storytelling into something intimate, unsettling, and unforgettable.

Link below 👇 I drew the short straw.

Somehow, that led me to a funeral.

This year at Tampa Fringe Festival, I’m stepping into something strange, intimate, and deeply human: A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know.

It’s an immersive performance about the people we overlook. The coworker at the edge of the room. The neighbor we never really knew. The person in the red shoes orbits everyone else’s life.

But the deeper question is quieter:

What if the person we didn’t know… is someone we ignored?

Or someone we’ve been?

This show is part funeral, part ritual, part reflection on loneliness, belonging, and the strange roles we play in one another’s lives.

Most of us didn’t know him.

That is where the story begins.

A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know is an immersive theatre experience at Tampa Fringe 2026 that invites audiences into an unusual memorial for a man they may never have met, but somehow begin to recognize.

A single worn red shoe.
An empty chair.
A microphone waiting.
A room full of strangers.
And one question hanging in the air:

What do we owe someone once they are gone?

This is not a traditional play. It is part funeral, part confession, part collective remembering. The audience enters as guests, witnesses, maybe mourners, maybe strangers, and slowly discovers that the ceremony is not only about the man in the red shoes.

It is about the stories we leave behind.
The people we barely notice.
The lives that brush against ours.
The strange tenderness of showing up.

Created for audiences who love intimate theatre, immersive storytelling, emotional mystery, dark humor, and human connection, this experience turns a funeral for a stranger into a mirror for the living.

Some moments make the work feel real in a new way.

Grateful to have been invited into a photo shoot with the legendary Dave Decker, whose lens has documented so much of the raw, strange, alive, beautifully unruly creative spirit of Tampa Bay.

For A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know, this felt especially meaningful.

The show is about being seen.

About the people we pass by.

About the stories that remain unfinished until someone stops long enough to witness them.

So to have Dave bring his eye to this little ritual of a show felt like the right kind of alignment: a photographer who understands presence, a festival built on risk, and a performance asking strangers to gather around absence and make meaning together.

Thank you, Dave, for the generosity, the eye, and the care.

Looking forward to seeing how the shoot turned out in the next Creative Loafing Tampa Bay feature.

What if a funeral wasn’t something you watched, but something you helped complete?

A Funeral for Someone You Didn’t Know is an immersive theatrical experience at Tampa Fringe Festival, written and produced by Steve Diasio and The School of Creativity and Innovation.

This short moment begins with the guest book.

Before the show starts, every audience member is asked one question:

How did you know him?

Neighbor.
Coworker.
Karaoke friend.
Sister.
Stranger.

You choose a relationship.
You enter the ritual.
You become part of the story.

This is theater beyond the safe distance. It is part performance, part memorial, part reception, part mirror. It asks what happens when strangers gather to mourn someone they never knew, and what that reveals about who we overlook in our own lives.
