What is the School of Facilitation?

Hey there! I'm Kirsty, and I started the School of Facilitation based on a need I deeply felt in my own journey as a trainer and a facilitator.

I know all too well the ups and downs of being a facilitator – the travels, the energy, the moments of both triumph and challenge.

That's exactly why I wanted to create a special spot for us – a cozy, welcoming place where you can unwind, find support, and recharge your creative batteries.

Whether you're flying solo and looking to hone your facilitation skills, or you're part of a corporate team eager to enhance teamwork and communication, I'm here for you. Let's walk this path together.

Come join us at the School of Facilitation, and be part of our warm, vibrant community that's all about loving and living the art of facilitation.

Being good at your subject doesn’t automatically mean you were ever taught how to design a great learning experience around it.

A lot of us learn by doing.

We borrow formats we’ve seen before, adapt old slides, add an activity here and there, and gradually build our own way of working.

But there’s a big difference between putting content into a session and designing an experience that helps people understand, engage and actually use what they’ve learned.

That’s what this class is about.

We’ll look at how to design with more intention - from structure and flow to participation, pace and what you want people to leave able to do differently.

If you’ve become an expert in your field but never really learned the design bit, this is your chance.

There’s a strange point in your career where being experienced can actually make development harder.

When you were starting out, the gaps were obvious. There was always another skill to practise, course to take or person to learn from.

But once you’re established? The question becomes less “How do I get better?” and more “What do I need now?”

Maybe it’s someone who can spot the things you can’t see yourself.

Maybe it’s space to test an idea before taking it into the room.

Maybe it’s being around other experienced facilitators who challenge how you think.

Maybe it’s support with the bits that sit around the facilitation itself - clients, pricing, confidence, business.

That’s exactly why we created the FLOW Mastermind.

A space for experienced facilitators who want to keep growing, be challenged, sharpen their thinking and learn alongside people who really understand the work.

If you’re at the point where another generic course isn’t what you need, FLOW might be.

AI is everywhere, but working out where it genuinely helps in a training business is another matter.

Rob has been using Claude Code inside Presenting Virtually since February, and it’s already changed the way he handles a lot of his work.

Tomorrow, Rob will take us behind the scenes and show how he’s actually using it day to day, what it’s helping with, and where it’s saving him time.

Building a business

There will be a reason you started doing what you are doing.

You will have your origin story.

I encourage you to revisit it from time to time.

I sometimes wonder what I woukd be doing if my mum hadnt died. Would I have found the impetus to create SOF?

SoF is 12 years old. It has been an absolute rollercoaster of a ride. And one I have loved.

Whats your origin story?

Oh and if you are looking for a community of facilitators and trainers who get you, understand your world, are super generous then go to the bio and follow the links. by @schooloffacilitation

The SOFest itinerary tells you what happens.

It doesn’t really tell you what the day feels like.

You might start with a swim or a slow coffee, spend the morning in a session that gets you thinking differently, then carry that conversation into lunch with someone you’ve only just met.

You might choose a workshop in the afternoon. You might sit one out completely and take some time by the water instead.

By the evening, the pace changes again. Food, conversations, music, fire, and the kind of chats that somehow become just as useful as the sessions themselves.

That freedom is a big part of SOFest.

You can follow the programme closely, dip in and out, or make space for whatever you need that day.

The aim is to give you the time, people and environment to come away with something that stays with you long after you’ve gone home.

Three days by a lake in Essex, surrounded by people who spend their working lives helping other people learn, think and grow.

SOFest is for facilitators, trainers, coaches, L&D practitioners, mentors and anyone whose work involves creating space for others.

Across the three days, you can choose from 9 speaker sessions and 16 hands-on workshops covering facilitation, learning, clients and business - alongside peer conversations, reflection and plenty of time outside.

And when you’re not in a session?

You might be swimming in the lake, sitting under the trees, walking through the meadow, sharing dinner, or ending the evening around the fire.

Nothing is compulsory. If you want to skip a workshop and sit outside for an hour, you can.

Your ticket includes accomodation, all meals, snacks and drinks, plus the optional activities across the festival. If camping really isn’t for you, there are nearby accommodation options too.

SOFest 2027 takes place 15 - 17th June at Chalkney Water Meadows in Essex, with just 100 places available.

If this looks like your kind of professional development, you can find all the details and tickets via the link in our bio. by @schooloffacilitation

When you’re surrounded by people who understand your world, you can get straight into the useful stuff: what’s actually happening, what you’re stuck on, what you could try next - and learn from people dealing with many of the same things.

That’s a big part of what FLOW is designed to offer.

A mastermind for experienced facilitators, coaches and trainers working in the B2B and corporate space, with people who understand the work and the business around it.

If you’d like to be part of the next FLOW cohort, we have two Q&A sessions coming up - register for them via the link in the bio. by @schooloffacilitation
