SCI just got a new pin on the map.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani — former Prime Minister, current Chairman of the Senate, and Acting President of Pakistan — stepped up and placed Pakistan on the Safari Club International world map, marking the country’s place among SCI’s global chapters.

It wasn’t just ceremonial. Addressing the gathering in Islamabad, the Acting President called for close coordination among government institutions, local communities, wildlife professionals, hunters and conservation organizations to move wildlife conservation forward. He noted that Pakistan can benefit from international experience while sharing its own expertise in wildlife management, and made the case that responsible, ethical hunting — done lawfully and sustainably — can support conservation and deliver real benefits to local communities. He also pushed for transparent, practical policy shaped by the views of every stakeholder at the table, and expressed hope for deeper international cooperation to protect Pakistan’s wildlife and natural heritage.

Pakistan is officially on the board — and the country’s highest offices are backing the mission.

In this interview, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Chief Conservator of the Wildlife Department of Gilgit-Baltistan, delivers a clear message regarding proposals by countries like France to ban trophy hunting imports:

-28+ years of proven success: Their community-managed sustainable hunting program operates across 65 conservation areas.
-Real economic impact: It has generated over 4 billion Pakistani rupees for the rural economy.
-Social development: 80% of the proceeds go directly to local communities, with 70% of that share invested in education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure.

The result of bans like the one proposed in France?
It disincentivizes the local communities who protect wildlife daily and strips funding from schools and health centers in the most remote valleys.

The season doesn’t start with a whisper. It starts with a drive.

The SCI Portugal Chapter kicked off the season with its first driven hunt — bringing members together for a full day in the field, shotguns up, dogs working, and a lot of laughter between drives.

But if you were only watching the shooting, you missed half of it. The real story was everywhere else: old friends catching up over breakfast, new members getting to know the club, prizes handed out, gift bags packed, and a dining hall full of people who’d rather be here than almost anywhere else.

Initiatives like these are about more than the hunt itself. They strengthen the hunting community, preserve longstanding traditions, and create space to promote responsible hunting, wildlife conservation and sustainable habitat management — one season at a time.
