🌍 Trophy hunting and community involvement: a key to wildlife conservation in Pakistan.

In this interview, Juan Magaz, European Liaison of SCI Europe, speaks with Sharif Baluch, Chief Conservator of Wildlife in Balochistan, Pakistan, about the impact that bans on trophy imports could have on wildlife conservation and local communities.

With 80% of trophy hunting proceeds going directly to local communities, the programme provides an economic incentive for residents to protect wildlife and helps support conservation efforts in a region with limited resources for wildlife management.

As Sharif Baluch explains, restricting these programmes could undermine the commitment of communities that play a crucial role in protecting wildlife and preserving the wider ecosystem.

🚨 Banning trophy hunting to "protect" nature? The serious danger of European import bans.

In this interview, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Chief Conservator of the Wildlife Department of Gilgit-Baltistan, delivers a clear message regarding proposals by countries like France to ban trophy hunting imports:

-28+ years of proven success: Their community-managed sustainable hunting program operates across 65 conservation areas.
-Real economic impact: It has generated over 4 billion Pakistani rupees for the rural economy.
-Social development: 80% of the proceeds go directly to local communities, with 70% of that share invested in education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure.

The result of bans like the one proposed in France?
It disincentivizes the local communities who protect wildlife daily and strips funding from schools and health centers in the most remote valleys.

True conservation relies on science and supporting rural communities -not on ideologically driven bans.

Another hunting day comes to an end, and the story remains the same.
We have spent the entire season tracking this magnificent, mature roebuck.
We know his territory, we have analyzed it, and we have waited for hours. Yet, once again, he outsmarted us.
Our goal isn’t just to harvest any animal, but to practice proper wildlife management. Taking the right mature buck at the right time is essential for a balanced and healyht population.
Have you ever spent a whole season tracking a single, elusive buck? Let me know your stories below! 👇

🦌 HUNTER FACT OF THE DAY

The men who saved the Markhor were hunters themselves.

In 1984, tribal leaders in Balochistan's Torghar Hills faced a crisis: decades of unregulated hunting during the Afghan war had crashed the Suleiman Markhor and Afghan Urial population to fewer than 200 animals combined. Their solution wasn't to ban hunting — it was to control it. Seven former hunters put down their weapons and became the region's first "game guards," funded entirely by limited, regulated trophy permits.

Today, that same population exceeds 3,000. The Torghar Conservation Project became the blueprint for every community-based hunting program in Pakistan since.

This is where it all started. Comment 🏔️ if you didn't know about this model.
