Do you know the 5 elements of financial statements? 👀

They are:
💰 Assets
🏦 Liabilities
👥 Equity
📈 Income
💸 Expenses

But memorising the names isn’t enough.
You should also be able to recognise where everyday accounts like cash, inventory, loans, sales, rent and salaries belong.

That’s when financial statements really start to make sense.

📌 Save this for revision.
📤 Share it with someone learning Accounting, Finance or Business Analysis.

Who am I... and why do I teach so many different things? 🤔

I’ve had people ask...

“Do you teach Business Analysis?”

“Accounting?”

“Excel?”

“Power BI?”

“Career advice?”

The answer is...

Yes. 😊

Accounting was my first love.

I spent over 15 years in the profession, became a Chartered Accountant, worked at EY and KPMG, and later transitioned into Business Analysis.

Today, Business Analysis is my career.

Excel and Power BI are tools I use every day.

Accounting is still something I’m passionate about.

And I love sharing career advice too—from confidence and communication to office politics and professional growth.

Why not?

If you’ve spent years learning something that can genuinely help other people...

Share it.

Teach it.

Help someone else.

Knowledge is meant to be shared.

If you’re new here...

Welcome! 👋

This is exactly the kind of content you can expect from me.

👇 What’s one skill you’ve learned that could help someone else?

Your manager has already decided whether to trust you. 👀

Not when you ask for flexibility. Long before that.

✔️ Do what you say you’ll do
✔️ Communicate when you’re delayed
✔️ Don’t disappear when there’s a problem
✔️ Don’t make people chase you

Because one day you’ll need to start late, leave early, or work from home unexpectedly. When that day comes, your reputation speaks first.

Build trust in the little things. Every day.

Save this for your next Monday. 🔖

5 things I stopped doing as I got more experienced 👇

1️⃣ Trying to prove I know everything
2️⃣ Waiting until it’s perfect to share it
3️⃣ Saying yes immediately
4️⃣ Doing work without knowing why it matters
5️⃣ Measuring my value by how busy I am

Busy ≠ impact. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is simplify, prevent a problem, or help someone make a better decision.

📌 Save this if you’re building your career.
💬 Which one do you need to stop doing?

Would you let the devs build this? 👀

“Customers should be able to cancel their orders” sounds simple… until you ask:
❓ Can ALL orders be cancelled?
❓ Until when?
❓ Shipped already?
❓ Refunds — how fast?
❓ Partial orders?
❓ Who can cancel?

A BA doesn’t just write it down. A BA works out what it actually means. 🧠

Stop debiting expense just because cash left the bank. Read this:
A business pays £6,000 for a 12 month policy.
The keyword is 12 months.
The cash is gone now, but the benefit is for the future. So we have to think about timing.
Here is how to break it down:
1. Work out the monthly cost
£6,000 / 12 = £500 per month
2. This month
£500 belongs to this month. That is your expense.
3. Future months
£6,000 - £500 = £5,500. This is for future months. So this is a prepayment, not an expense yet.
The lesson is not:
"Money left the bank, so debit expense."
The better question is:
"Which period does this cost belong to?"
Cash can happen in one month. But you recognise the expense over the period it relates to. That is accruals in real life.
Save this one because timing is where a lot of accounting mistakes start.

🚨 YOUR EXCEL FILE MIGHT BE WORKING PERFECTLY…

and STILL be a problem.

5 warning signs:

🚩 1. Only ONE person knows how it works

What happens if they leave?

🚩 2. Nobody knows where the numbers came from

“Why is this £48,726?”

“…Good question.” 😭

🚩 3. You’re copying and pasting the SAME data every week

If it’s repetitive and predictable, ask whether it can be automated.

🚩 4. One wrong cell can break EVERYTHING

One change shouldn’t create unexplained chaos across the workbook.

🚩 5. You’re afraid to touch it

“Can you update this spreadsheet?”

You: “Please don’t break. Please don’t break.” 😭

A good spreadsheet shouldn’t JUST give you the right answer.

It should be:

✅ UNDERSTANDABLE
✅ TRACEABLE
✅ MAINTAINABLE

📌 SAVE this before your next spreadsheet becomes mission critical.

🚨 ACCOUNTING TEST:

The owner takes £3,000 from the business bank account for PERSONAL use.

Is it a business expense? 👀

❌ NO.

This is where beginners can get caught.

MONEY OUT ≠ AUTOMATICALLY AN EXPENSE

Ask:

“WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?”

The owner withdrew money for personal use.

Depending on the business structure and accounting framework, this may be recorded through owner’s equity/drawings rather than as a business expense.

Bank = Asset ↓

CR Bank £3,000

The other side records the owner’s withdrawal/drawings.

🔥 The important lesson:

Don’t start with:

“Money went out — what expense is this?”

Start with:

“What actually happened?”

Then identify the accounts.

Did you get it right? 👀

📌 SAVE this one — it’s easy to misclassify.

Sometimes your own initiative is already hiding inside the work you’re helping someone else deliver. 👀

You don’t always have to come up with some massive brand-new idea.

Sometimes it’s the little gap you notice while doing the main work — something manual, something nobody owns, something that keeps causing frustration.

That little gap could become your baby project.

I promise you, those small initiatives can become some of your strongest career examples later.

“Can you send me the requirements document?”

BA: “Which one?”

Stakeholder: “You know… THE requirements document.” 😭

If you’re a new BA, you’ve probably realised there are A LOT of possible documents:

Requirements document.
User stories.
Process maps.
Use cases.
Acceptance criteria.
Business rules.

But the real question isn’t:

“What BA documents exist?”

It’s:

“WHICH ONE DO I NEED RIGHT NOW?”

Before creating anything, ask:

→ What problem am I solving?
→ What information is needed?
→ Who needs it?
→ What stage are we at?
→ What decision needs to be made?
→ What does the delivery team need?

That’s exactly why I created a Quick Find Index + Decision Tree inside my Business Analyst Professional Toolkit.

Because good BA work isn’t about producing MORE documentation.

🔥 It’s about producing the RIGHT information at the RIGHT time.

You use Copilot.

But are you still giving it the same prompts over and over again? 👀

There’s another way.

In this tutorial, I show you how to create a reusable Copilot Skill in Excel using a real monthly reporting example.

Instead of repeatedly explaining how you want your report cleaned, formatted and calculated:

Build the instructions once. Reuse them again and again. 🔁

This was such an interesting feature to explore!
