Twelve people. Two hours. One decision.
…Oat milk. 🥛

Every BA has run this meeting at least once. Here’s the 5-step fix:

1️⃣ Decide what you need to leave with. Write it at the top.
2️⃣ Send a timed agenda. Every slot has an output, not a topic.
3️⃣ Invite people for a reason. If you can’t write why, don’t invite them.
4️⃣ Anything off-topic goes in the parking lot. Yes, even the coffee machine.
5️⃣ Before anyone leaves, read back every decision and action, with a name and a date.

The templates for all five are in the Business Analyst Professional Toolkit, so you know what to use and when, at every stage of the project.

Your manager has already decided whether to trust you. 👀

Not when you ask for flexibility. Long before that.

✔️ Do what you say you’ll do
✔️ Communicate when you’re delayed
✔️ Don’t disappear when there’s a problem
✔️ Don’t make people chase you

Because one day you’ll need to start late, leave early, or work from home unexpectedly. When that day comes, your reputation speaks first.

Build trust in the little things. Every day.

Save this for your next Monday. 🔖

5 things I stopped doing as I got more experienced 👇

1️⃣ Trying to prove I know everything
2️⃣ Waiting until it’s perfect to share it
3️⃣ Saying yes immediately
4️⃣ Doing work without knowing why it matters
5️⃣ Measuring my value by how busy I am

Busy ≠ impact. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is simplify, prevent a problem, or help someone make a better decision.

📌 Save this if you’re building your career.

Would you let the devs build this? 👀

“Customers should be able to cancel their orders” sounds simple… until you ask:
❓ Can ALL orders be cancelled?
❓ Until when?
❓ Shipped already?
❓ Refunds — how fast?
❓ Partial orders?
❓ Who can cancel?

A BA doesn’t just write it down. A BA works out what it actually means. 🧠

🚨 ACCOUNTING TEST:

The owner takes £3,000 from the business bank account for PERSONAL use.

Is it a business expense? 👀

❌ NO.

This is where beginners can get caught.

MONEY OUT ≠ AUTOMATICALLY AN EXPENSE

Ask:

“WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?”

The owner withdrew money for personal use.

Depending on the business structure and accounting framework, this may be recorded through owner’s equity/drawings rather than as a business expense.

Bank = Asset ↓

CR Bank £3,000

The other side records the owner’s withdrawal/drawings.

🔥 The important lesson:

Don’t start with:

“Money went out — what expense is this?”

Start with:

“What actually happened?”

Then identify the accounts.

Did you get it right? 👀

📌 SAVE this one — it’s easy to misclassify.

You use Copilot.

But are you still giving it the same prompts over and over again? 👀

There’s another way.

In this tutorial, I show you how to create a reusable Copilot Skill in Excel using a real monthly reporting example.

Instead of repeatedly explaining how you want your report cleaned, formatted and calculated:

Build the instructions once. Reuse them again and again. 🔁

This was such an interesting feature to explore!

🚨 USER STORY OR USE CASE?

They’re NOT exactly the same thing.

Imagine a customer withdrawing money from an ATM.

USER STORY:

“As a customer, I want to withdraw cash so that I can access my money.”

Short.
User-focused.
Focused on the NEED.

USE CASE:

Goes deeper into the interaction:

→ Insert card
→ Enter PIN
→ Select withdrawal
→ Choose amount
→ Check balance
→ Dispense cash
→ Update account

PLUS:

What if the PIN is wrong?

Insufficient funds?

ATM has no cash?

That’s the difference in DETAIL.

USER STORY = concise statement of the user need

USE CASE = more detailed interaction or flow

But don’t obsess over labels.

The real question is:

Does the team have enough detail to understand what needs to happen?

👇 Which do you prefer — User Stories or Use Cases?

People really underestimate quiet periods at work. 👀

When everything is busy, sometimes you barely have enough time to do the actual job, never mind think about improvements, new ideas or things you could build.

So when things calm down a little… enjoy it, absolutely 😂 but use some of that breathing room for yourself too.

Learn something. Improve something. Automate something. Solve one of those little problems everybody has just accepted as “the way we do things.”

I promise you, those little things can become some of your best examples when performance review, promotion conversations or even future interviews come around.

Anyway… just something I’ve learnt along the way. ❤️

🚨 DON’T CLOSE THE MONTH YET.

Check these 5 things first:

1️⃣ BANK RECONCILIATION

Does the accounting balance agree to the bank statement?

If not — WHY?

2️⃣ ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE

Who owes you money?

Are there old balances that need chasing or reviewing?

3️⃣ ACCOUNTS PAYABLE

Have all supplier invoices been recorded?

Are there liabilities missing?

4️⃣ PREPAYMENTS & ACCRUALS

Have expenses been recorded in the RIGHT accounting period?

Remember:

CASH TIMING ≠ EXPENSE TIMING

5️⃣ UNUSUAL BALANCES

Look for:

⚠️ Negative expenses
⚠️ Unusually high balances
⚠️ Sudden movements
⚠️ Numbers that just don’t make sense

And ask one simple question:

“DOES THIS LOOK REASONABLE?”

Month-end isn’t just about ticking boxes.

The numbers you’re about to report need to tell a credible story.

📌 SAVE this as your month-end checklist.
