Training update - 9 weeks until CIM ✨

Before going on vacation, I felt like I was getting into a good groove. Workouts and long runs were feeling smooth, I was adjusted to the weather, and I ran an unexpected 5k PR! I knew training would take a back seat while on vacation, but it would be supplemented by a lot of additional activity and time on feet.

When we got back, I struggled a bit because everything just felt hard. The humidity was crushing, the time change messed me up, I had to go back to work, commute, 4am wake ups, and it was the anniversary of my Mom’s passing 😢

BUT I tried to give myself some grace, trust the process, and have patience. After about a week, I settled back in and training has been better than expected! I’ve had strong workouts, amazing long runs, and have hit my highest mileage week ever 2 weeks in a row! 🤩📈

With 9 weeks to go, I’m excited to keep working hard and remain open and curious to what I may be able to achieve! 💥 by @scolajillian

🍌 A very late post because of vacation, but this was a fun race and I don’t race a 5k very frequently!

The Banana Split 5k
A PR and my first time ever breaking a finish line tape 🤯 this was a very small race and I thought I had a good chance of being in the top 3 for females.

I didn’t look at my watch at all while running and just tried to keep my effort steady and hard. In hindsight, I probably could have pushed more, but I was happy to only have a slight positive split. The race finishes on the track and when I made the turn, I was surprised to see 19:54 on the clock! I didn’t think I would ever run that close to 20! They pulled out the tape and I sprinted for the finish - official time 20:10!

I never, ever thought I could break 20 in the 5k, but this race made me believe it is possible! ✨

Slogging through summer miles while dreaming of cooler temps and fall races 🍂 here is where I’ll be running this fall!

Banana 5k - Aug 22 - technically still summer, but I’m lumping it in with fall races! Running for fun and trying to beat my best 5k time from last summer 🍌

Indy half - Nov 7 - we ran here in 2024 and loved it! I’m excited to go back and use this as a tune up/fitness check before my “A” race of the season! 🏁

CIM - Dec 6 - my main goal race for fall! I’ve heard such good things about CIM and can’t wait to experience it for myself! I’ll definitely be trying for a new PR on this fast course! 💨

Is anyone else ready for fall?! Let me know what races you have planned!

“You’re obsessed.”
“You run too much.”
“Maybe you should just stop trying.”
“Why can’t you just run a local race?”
“Why is Boston so important?”
“You’re crazy.”

I was told all of these things (and more) by an ex. I was actively discouraged and made to feel bad for pursuing my passions and dreams. I was scared to sign up for anything that wasn’t a local race because of the reaction I would face. My running was an “inconvenience” even though I did all I could to minimize the impact (running before he woke, doing all the laundry, all the cooking, etc).

The man I married couldn’t be more different - he is kind, caring, and compassionate. He encourages my goals and is my biggest supporter. He appreciates my hard work and understands that running makes me a better person in all aspects of life. Having his unwavering support makes all the difference while chasing after big goals.

Running is no longer met with friction and backlash, which makes the whole experience more enjoyable - training, racing, and traveling are fun again, which has resulted in multiple new PR’s (I had zero while in the unsupportive relationship).

Don’t forget to thank the supportive people in your life - they truly make all the difference ❤️ @justin.najewicz

What everyone else sees ➡️
Finish line smiles, medals, PRs

What I see ➡️
4am wake-ups, long runs, speed work, strength training, eating and sleeping enough, consistency over the years, big dreams

Race day is great, but the daily process and journey is my favorite ✨

🦬 Buffalo Half / Niagara Falls Weekend 💧

I registered for Buffalo as a backup race in case things went poorly in Eugene - thankfully Eugene went great! The approach for Buffalo was very up in the air and I thought that I could perhaps squeak out another tiny PR since the course is a little flatter than Eugene.

Unfortunately, I ended up getting sick after Eugene while we were still on vacation and I think that really delayed my recovery. I ran the first 3 miles in Buffalo around 7:00/mi and it felt like a *struggle*. So I pulled back, ran comfortably, high fived all the kids, and enjoyed the race environment! It was a great end to the spring racing season!

We also went to Niagara Falls for the first time, took a ride on “The Maid of the Mist”, and walked to Canada!🇨🇦

Now time to rest, recover, and start dreaming up plans for fall!

Eugene Half Recap 🦆💚

We spent an amazing weekend in Eugene! We watched pancakes race the 5k and stepped inside Hayward Field for the first time!

I had a solid training cycle for this half marathon and pushed myself in new workouts, mileage, and paces. I had a really big goal of going sub 90, but realized a few weeks before the race that targeting 1:30-1:32 was a bit more realistic with how my training was going.

I was nervous going into this race because I had worked really hard and it was intimidating to try to run so many miles sub 7 - that is a huge mental and physical barrier for me! But I was willing to give it a shot!

Race morning went smoothly and before I knew it, we were off! My goal was to start conservative, run the hills at mile 5 and 9 by effort, and finish out strong.

Things were going well until the course entered a park after mile 10 - the path narrowed, was twisty, and there were people walking/biking/with strollers on the opposite side of the path. It threw me off a bit that late in the race and while I could maintain my pacing, I wasn’t able to really kick it in like I wanted.

I also think the course elevation beat me up a bit more than I expected at that effort and I didn’t quite have the leg speed or breath left at the end. I gave what I had and was so happy to see Hayward looming in the last half mile! Making that final turn into the stadium is pure magic! I tried to soak in the experience and enjoy the special finish line moment 🥹

I’m really happy with this race and effort - the course was harder than I expected so to still have a solid PR on a much harder course than Indy is encouraging! I feel like I have more to give in this distance so may be trying again soon! 👀
