Deep in the heart of the Sandhills….Maybe not Neolithic or from the Bronze Age but certainly early steel age rises the ancient Carhenge.
One of the world’s great wonders 😁

The most famous Newport Pool Hall 🎱 (no comments on our weak pool skills)

If you are riding the cowboy trail this is a must see.
Shawn, who was riding a mower in the park area to the north drove over after we had finished shooting pool. This building originally was the location of hay scales and office in the late 1800’s. It was converted into a pool hall by Shawn and Melissa.
“Melissa thought she could turn it into a post office for the town. But when that didn’t materialize, she still bought the building and turned it into a pool hall. And it’s tiny! “I get a lot of kids from the neighboring towns who come, they just hang out here, and they do a good job of cleaning up after themselves,” Denny said. The pool hall is open all the time, and anyone is welcome to come by and play a game of pool.”

We did it! This was a meaningful pilgrimage for me.
Valentine to Norfolk NE
Biking 204 miles, a long while in the saddle 🤠🚲
Riding over 200 bridge 🌁 crossings
Passing through 21 rural communities/towns 🏘️
One day of headwinds, one day of tailwinds, the other days a crosswind out of the south (none very strong)🌬️Seeing countless windmills, some of which were old wooden structures
Observing so many abandoned telephone poles with insulators on them (longing to climb up and snag one)
Watching Pronghorn, coyote, monarch butterflies, hawks, finch, deer, snakes and so many more🦌🐍🦋🦅🐺🫏🐎🐇
Saying hello to cattle, donkeys, mules and horses spread out over the landscape 🐂 🫏 🐴
And feeling a deep gratitude and joy in the ride.

The Nebraska Sandhills (swipe left for the movie)

The Nebraska Sandhills region is the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere, spanning over one-fourth the total land area of Nebraska.
Formed after the last Ice Age when winds blew the loose sand deposited by retreating glaciers, the Sandhills were shaped into dunes as high as four hundred feet
Native grassland covers 19,600 square miles, or 95% of the wind-deposited sand dunes. Its geology makes the area rich for wildlife, water and ranching.
Many people think of the Sandhills as dry, arid country, but the region is sitting on top of a billion acre-feet of water in the Ogallala Aquifer.
The Nebraska Sandhills are home to over 720 different varieties of plants, most of them sand-tolerant plants from short-grass, mixed-grass, and tall-grass.
Both small and large mammals make their home among the dunes and meadows from Ground Squirrels, Kangaroo Rats and Porcupines to White-tail and Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope and Bison.

Did you know?

A cowboy boot on a fence post has a number of meanings.

• Fallen Comrades: Families and friends often place a pair of old, worn work boots on a post to honor a deceased rancher or cowboy.
• Beloved Horses: Cowboys form deep bonds with their working horses. When a favorite horse dies or is sold, a rancher may place boots on the fence as a sign of respect.
• Symbol of Hard Work: Worn-out boots represent years of labor on the land, serving as a quiet tribute to a life spent working outdoors.

Historical Signals

• Signaling Home: Before cell phones and modern communication, boots on a fence helped neighbors or visitors know if someone was around.
• Indicating Location: A boot pointing toward the main house meant the owner was home. A boot pointing out toward the fields meant the rancher was still out working.

Three days of riding under bright blue skies and into a sparkling sun. A lot of things had to fall into place including fighting off a cold. Lots of challenges but a certain joy has accompanied me on this ride also thoughts of my dad who lived either in the Sandhills or at the edge most of his life. He even had a stint working as a ranch hand in his 20’s up here, a real cowboy. I’m enjoying your land dad.

Pronghorn sighting! These animals are so fascinating.
—Known as the second-fastest land mammal on Earth (behind the cheetah), it can run up to 55–60 miles per hour and keep up high speeds for long distances
—They have large eyes that give them 320 degrees of vision, letting them spot movement from miles away.
—As herbivores, they eat grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and cactus, and can go weeks without drinking water
—They are the only surviving member of the family Antilocapridae and are closely related to giraffes! 🦒

Sunset from the Cowboy Trail. 90 miles of riding in two days. Lots of time just be quiet and listen…to the birds, the rustling wind, cows mooing, the tires going over compacted crushed rock. A time for throwing out bad thoughts and welcoming in good. Conversations with Patty, conversations with God and conversations withe locals. I still find that Nebraskans are the nicest people.
