A very clean white on white Ensemble chandelier hanging in the studio for documentation. It was the Summer of Zerbini in the studio as we made this chandelier for a residential project by @dunnamzerbini alongside the sculpture we made for their Kips Bay show house. This piece has our Warm White translucent glaze paired with matching white powder coated metal, and measures 98”L x 36”D.

Last week was the opening of the Kips Bay show house in New York @kbshowhouse sponsored by @galeriemagazine, We had the honor of working with Kelly Zerbini from @dunnamzerbini Interior Design and made a sculptural ceramic mirror surround for her Velvet Hour Lounge in the living room. After the install I had a chance to enjoy the space before the storm. Here is a cute pick from install day and some detail shots of the piece lit from within. #ceramics #fireplace #ceramiclighting #madebyhand by @scott_daniel

Velvet Hour by night
Highlighting the extraordinary efforts that went into the redesign of our room in our @kbshowhouse room.
Scott Daniel Strickstein @scott_daniel accepted the enormous task of creating a site specific fireplace sculpture, with integrated lighting and all, in an impossible timeline.
Richard Haining @richardhaining created a trio of commissioned wooden vessels made from decommissioned New York City water tower wood, to add an airiness to the elevation.
Grietje Schepers @grietjeschepers felt chandelier illuminates the entire space while tempering the 18’ ceilings to create an intimate environment.
Paul Michael Graves @paulmichaelgraves hand painted frieze and ceiling add visual interest and help break up the height of the space.
@romeomivekannin painting presiding over the sofa, reflecting in the mirror. He paints his face into historic portraits to reclaim a place within the images and history. His works ask us to reconsider how history is remembered.

These are some of the collaborative, bespoke efforts that went into our Kips Bay Showhouse room this year.

Introducing the Bloom Sconce, handmade from ceramic mesh and brass, and offered as a single, double or triple stem sconce. Seen here with our warm white translucent glaze and satin brass finish. The stems can be rotated during installation for variation. Each shade is handmade, no two shades will ever be the same. These can be ordered with any combination of finishes from our collection.

Some Wire-Form study photos from the studio and behind the scenes shot by @joeinstakramm All of the CMesh (Ceramic Mesh) pieces we make begin as a wire-form, hand made and fabricated to become the armatures or skeletons of future lighting, furniture, and sculptural objects.

Scott Daniel Strickstein (@scott_daniel) is an artist and designer based between Brooklyn and Costa Rica, where he leads Scott Daniel Design, a studio focused on sculptural lighting and furniture. What sets his work apart is C-Mesh, a material he invented and has spent the last 15 years perfecting.

C-Mesh combines two materials that normally don’t get along: clay and metal. Each piece starts as metal wire bent into a form, which then gets dipped into liquid clay over and over, usually 8 to 12 times, until a ceramic body builds up around the metal skeleton. Scott compares it to old world candle making, where wax slowly accumulates on a wick with each dip.

The story behind the material is great. Scott first saw a small version of the experiment from one of his professors back in school, played with it briefly, and then let the idea sit for years. After moving to New York and finally getting a studio of his own, he came back to it, partly out of practicality. He was working more than full-time, and most clay work demands daily attention. This process didn’t. A piece could sit untouched for 6 months and pick right back up with no issues.

What we find most interesting is how much remains out of his control. Room temperature, humidity, the moisture in the clay, the timing of each dip, all of it shapes the final surface. Every piece comes out different, and even after 15 years, each new shape brings its own learning curve.

The move into lighting happened by accident. While handling early test pieces, Scott noticed how light passed through the small openings and cracks in the surface. He’d never made lighting before and had no plans to, but the effect stuck with him. His collections now span table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, occasional tables, and wall installations. by @scott_daniel

The beauty of collaborating with clients is discovering new ways to see my own work. We recently finished this Lopez Chandelier for @petemarinoarchitect with a custom developed Butterscotch glaze and Satin Brass.
