“Come to me always, you who remain by my side” — Frederick Kirwin, ‘A Simple Prayer’

Since meeting as fellows at The Edward F. Albee Foundation, painter Scott Kahn and poet Frederick Kirwin have lived together and supported one another’s work for over fifty years.

Now, after decades of partnership and dedication to their craft, the Kahn-Kirwin Foundation will serve to preserve the legacy of these two artists, and to give back to others the support they themselves once received.

It took @scott_kahn more than 50 years to become an overnight success.

A decade ago, the painter was living in his cousin’s attic, struggling to make ends meet. Now 80, Kahn walks CULTURED through “Silent Night,” his second solo exhibition with @davidzwirner. Across three rooms, the show traces a life in paint, moving through memories, relationships, and Kahn’s recurring fascination with light, time, and the natural world.

@scott_kahn never imagined that he would be kicking off New York’s busy fall art season with a solo show at the mega-gallery David Zwirner.

Ten years ago, he was a 70-year-old artist living in his cousin’s attic. He had come to accept that his painstakingly rendered, boldly colored landscapes would never be noticed by the art establishment.

“I really felt like… I would die in poverty,” Kahn tells CULTURED. “It was always, always, always a financial struggle. A struggle for recognition.”

In recent years, however, the artist experienced a profound change of fortune. His Zwirner show, “Silent Night,” on view through Oct. 17 in New York, is his second with the gallery (after a 2024 exhibition in Hong Kong). Paintings are priced between $350,000 and $1 million, with editioned prints also available at $5,000 to $12,000.

Scott Kahn’s work ‘Apples Still Life’ (1978) is included the group exhibition ‘Of Minor Importance’, currently on view at the gallery in London until 15 August.

Scott Kahn (b. 1946, US) presents a never exhibited before still life painting from 1978. Both classical and contemporary, Kahn’s ‘Apples Still Life’ can be interpreted as an extension of the self and his lived experience of the quotidian. It is an early example of the artist’s oeuvre which in his own word ‘[...] is driven and inspired by my life as I live it’.

Celebrating #WorldArtDay in the studio with Scott Kahn (@scott_kahn)!

For years, I had sought to visit his studio. And finally this past winter, a short Metro-North ride to upstate New York lent itself to an inspiring chat. Artists are as much creators as they are thinkers. Scott‘s paintings are a perfect reflection of that. They’re a gateway to understanding the self and finding connection in a world that too often feels solitary. As he puts it, “When I see a great work of art, I don’t feel like I’m so alone in the universe.”

On this day, we’re reminded of why we turn to art — not just to look, but to feel. Whether it‘s for 50 minutes or 3 hours a day, Scott paints to be free — to commune with something deeper. And maybe that’s the power of art. It makes the solo journey of life feel a little less lonely.
