I’m continually amazed by Scott’s uncanny fluency in transposing lived experience into a magical painterly language. As I’ve been following his creative output for years, I have the utmost respect for Scott, who, for decades, day in and day out, has been building his very own pictorial lexicon that consistently elicits wonder about an array of topics, from the complexities of interiority to the vastness of the cosmos.
While marveling at each canvas, I get the sense that, for Scott, it’s a matter of immersing himself in the reality of each work—one tree branch at a time, one stratocumulus cloud at a time, one blade of grass at a time—as though he’s having a conversation with each and every brushstroke that is laid down, all of which, in aggregate, coalesce into a symphony of visual passages. Scott’s patient attention to the natural world also calls to mind Asher B. Durand’s writings on nature’s transformative and restorative powers, and on the painter’s capacity to translate that experience into visual form.
Scott’s paintings activate our imaginations and touch something deeply human in us, a quality that, to me, directly reflects who he is as a person. During a visit with Scott at his studio a couple of years ago, I distinctly remember him speaking about a kind of internal mantra underlying his own conception of making art: fire, necessity, and depth—a credo that seems to permeate the paintings, giving them their particular combination of nerve, vigor, and rigor.

On view thru October 17.

I met @scott_kahn about 15 years ago when we realized we had studios on the same floor in DUMBO but just as we were about to have to move. He is a few years older than me and we both recognized in each other the commitment to developing our paintings regardless of the appreciation of the art establishment. We both knew that we were good and were dedicated to becoming better. It turned out to be a huge bond. Scott has a remarkable story of unflappable persistence in the face of difficulty, and he was discovered from Instagram by the now deceased artist Matthew Wong which enabled him to in a matter of short years to move from Harper’s to Almine Reich and now to this show at David Zwirner. And these basically landscape paintings are the best of his work and when you look closely at them a real joy of invention and discovery and dedication to behold.

But what is even more amazing is in an act of incredible generosity, he has taken his new found fortune and with his bf (husband?), Fred Kirwin has formed a foundation to help other artists. I am so proud to know Scott and support his work. He is a great example for younger artists.
