Let’s cut the crap.

Why are women carrying most of the burden of speaking out about the Cornell 7 situation?

Where are the men?

If we want to talk about what it means to “be a man,” it starts here. Real men do not excuse abuse. Real men do not minimize predatory behavior. Real men do not look the other way when women and children are harmed. And they certainly do not search for ways to justify the unjustifiable.

For too long, too many have stayed silent. We’ve laughed things off. We’ve treated serious issues as jokes. We’ve normalized behavior that should have been confronted the moment it appeared.

Silence is not strength.

Looking away is not leadership.

Excusing wrongdoing is not loyalty.

I’m disgusted by this entire situation, but more than that, I’m exhausted by the willingness of so many people to pretend these things aren’t happening until they become impossible to ignore.

We owe our sons a better example.

We owe our daughters a safer world.

We owe each other the courage to say, clearly and without hesitation.

THIS. IS. WRONG.

Enough is enough.

Be better. by @scottwindham

Twenty-five years later, it still feels like a lifetime ago, and yet I can remember that Tuesday morning with remarkable clarity.

On September 11, 2001, I was a college student in Lynchburg, Virginia, sitting in my 9:25 American Literature class with Professor Carolyn Towles. A student walked into class and mentioned that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center in New York City. I remember thinking, “That’s weird.”

A few minutes later, another student came in and said a second plane had hit the other tower. Even then, it hadn’t fully registered what was happening.

As I walked to my next class, I ran into my friend Seth Johnson. He looked at me and said, “Scott, we’re under attack. America is under attack.”

In that moment, I was awakened from the comfortable, safe world I had always known. Like millions of Americans, I suddenly realized that life as we knew it would never be the same.

As a college student more than a thousand miles from home, I felt fear and uncertainty in ways I never had before. Our world seemed less safe. Our eyes were opened to realities we had never considered. The days that followed were filled with questions, grief, patriotism, prayer, and a shared sense that we were living through a moment that would shape a generation.

Now, twenty-five years later, I still remember.

I remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the courage of first responders, and the unity our nation experienced in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.

I also remember the lesson that moments like these should teach us: life is fragile, people matter, and we need one another more than we sometimes realize.

So today, may we be a little kinder. A little more generous. May we spend less time focused on the things that divide us and more time recognizing the things that unite us.

I remain proud to be an American, humbled by the sacrifices made on that day and in the years that followed, and grateful that my ultimate hope rests not in governments, institutions, or financial markets, but in Jesus.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

I made 10 mini cornbreads to go with our white chicken chili tonight.

I counted them out without even thinking about it—making sure everyone would get the same amount. (Although sammy always eats some of mine cause he is 12 and a garbage disposal!😜)

And then I realized…

I didn’t need 10.

I only needed 8.

Because I only feed four people at home now. 😭

Such a silly, ordinary little moment. Cornbread on a weeknight. But somehow it held more meaning than I intended.

The heartache of realizing our table looks different now.
And the joy of knowing it looks different because one of our babies is out there building a life of her own. (And while we miss her sooo much, @lilypaige1 we are soooo proud!)

This part of motherhood is strange.

You spend years feeding them, counting heads, making sure there’s enough for everyone—and then one day, your hands remember a number your house no longer needs.

So tonight there are two extra cornbreads.

And apparently a lump in my throat. ❤️

Well, we did it. We loaded up the car, drove 1,500 miles to Ohio, unpacked what felt like an entire house into a dorm room with her amazing roommate and her family, hugged Lily goodbye, and flew back home. And there may have been a few tears along the way (but they definitely were not mine! 😜)

And just like that, she’s a college kid.

Coming home feels different.

The house is already a little slower, one less concert happening in the front bathroom and one less messy room.

And yet, we’re excited.

For as long as we can remember, Lily has dreamed big. She dreamed of performing, of finding a place where she could challenge herself and pursue what she loves. This week, she took a giant step toward that dream at @baldwinwallace . One of the most well respected musical theatre programs in the nation!

We’re incredibly proud of the talent, the awards, the performances, and the accomplishments. But we’re more proud of the work ethic, perseverance, courage, and passion that got her there.

It’s kind of crazy as a parent. You spend years teaching your kids to be independent and then one day they actually do it.

The house is a little quieter now. There is definitely a Lily-sized hole around here.

Go chase those dreams, baby girl. We are beyond proud and ecstatic to see where this next chapter takes you.

Also, peep the pictures from our last family dinner where Lily had one last sombrero serenade before leaving Texas! Also, we saw the house from A Christmas Story while in Cleveland, leg lamp and all!! taken in Baldwin Wallace University by @scottwindham
