Seeking out tigers in the wild can be very challenging but finding the ever elusive sloth bear, even if for a few moments out in the open raises that challenge to the next level. But sloth bear's innate reluctance to be seen might be a good thing given their reputation. Sloth bears (named due to their long claws and teeth, supposedly resembling a sloth) which live in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, are widely considered among the most aggressive animals on the Indian subcontinent. They are known to charge explosively at anyone they consider a threat – not just tigers, but also, humans. One study counting large carnivore attacks on humans around the world between 1950 and 2019 found that sloth bear attacks outnumbered all other species, including tigers, lions, wolves and any other bears. There had been 1,337 sloth bear attacks on humans during that period, compared to 1,047 by tigers, 414 by wolves, and only 23 by polar bears, for example. (Though tiger, lion and other big cat attacks on humans are deadlier – around 65% of them are fatal to humans, whereas around 8% of sloth bear attacks are lethal).

However, sloth bears are also facing many threats themselves, from habitat degradation to retaliation by humans. Their population is declining, and they have been classed as a vulnerable species, with their global population estimated at fewer than 20,000.

A pied crow descends a wavy and high contrast sandy ridge line of one of Namibia's giant dunes, creating a mix between an abstract landscape and wildlife image. For me, I love seeking out compositions that often blend or confuse the two styles.

Desert Extremes - Ethosha NP. The Etosha Pan is a huge, pristine oval-shaped salt pan situated in northern Namibia. It is the central feature of Namibia’s Etosha National Park and is comfortably the largest salt pan in Africa, visible even from space. The pan for most of the season is a dry, saline desert. The vast expanse of hard, salt-encrusted, vegetationless pan floor resulted in its name “bare place” in the Ndonga language. The high temperatures during the day and moisture-sapping salt surface result in an unsuitable habitat for most animals except ‘extremophiles. The only large animal to regularly inhabit the pan floor itself is ostriches that nest several kilometers into the pan where few predators will follow. In contrast, some species of large game including herds of zebras are found around its edges as they rest on the bare pan floor. Water is found only in some small spring-fed waterholes on the pan margin.

Desert Solitude. Its these quiet places on the planet that I often seek out. Places of peace, quiet, and solitude, far away from the hyper-stimulus of big cities and crowded places. I find these peaceful oasis good for the soul and a necessity for the mind.

An unusually late season series of rain storms blanketed parched parts of the Namibian desert the previous week resulting in a burst of color across desolate regions that are typically beige and rust colored this time of year. It was a nice surprise and Im sure the animals certainly appreciated the extra bounty of food resource.
