Honoured to be invited to create and exhibit some new work for @scriptazagreb, a new festival and exhibition showcasing the work of some of the best lettering artists and calligraphers from around the world.

The theme for the event is ‘Change’ – specifically inviting: “work that reminds the world why, in this era of profound transition, the human hand remains irreplaceable”.

My piece is a riff on the old adage of the pen, but updated for our times – a response the changes we’re all seeing and the impact they’re having.

To be clear, the message is firmly in the context of lettering and craftsmanship, and speaks specifically to the learning process. My niche is lettering and type design. I’m not a calligrapher, but I study and practice it because when it comes to learning about type and letters, I believe there’s no substitute for understanding the dynamics of the pen. Whether I’m creating by analogue or digital means this knowledge is the foundation of my process, it informs and guides all of my work.

Changes in tech have brought massive disruption to our processes, but also to learning. We can now choose to bypass process and learning altogether, and simply request a result or answer, without thought or effort. I think this is tragic.

But thankfully, there’s still some things just can’t be conjured from a prompt – experience. Experience brings the kind of knowledge that can only be gained from invested time. Exactly the thing we need to build a skill. Skills can only be earned – through practice and persistence and a whole lot of love. I think this is a beautiful thing, and should be celebrated more.

So hats off to @jimbobernaus and @meximuss of @lettering_daily for doing exactly that with this event, celebrating the lettering arts and human-made work. A big thanks, firstly for inviting me to take part, but also in undertaking a ton of work in creating this event.

The event runs from 2-4 October in Zagreb, Croatia. Alongside the exhibition there will be workshops and live demos by some of the best in the business. So get involved if you can, but either way follow @scriptazagreb for an imminent avalanche of inspiring letters by @scriptazagreb

3 DAYS TO GO! 🔥

Yesterday we couldn’t post because we spent the WHOLE day getting the panels ready for the live painting🎨 But here we are with Reason 4 to come to Scripta Zagreb:

THE LOCATION! ❤️

We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better home for Scripta than @muzej_grada_zagreba

Right in the heart of Zagreb’s beautiful Upper Town, surrounded by history, old streets and one of the most special parts of the city.

We’re extremely grateful to the whole museum team for trusting us, supporting this slightly crazy idea and helping us make it happen. ❤️

Workshops, exhibition, creation table, live painting, music… all happening in and around this beautiful place.

3 DAYS. IT’S GETTING REAL!

September photo dump. Some recent calligraphic works, some experiments, a brick, and some sketches.

You can also see a sneak peek of an artwork I’ll be hanging at Scripta Zagreb this weekend, and yes, it’s shiny ✨ Yes, I like shiny things, and that includes ink!
