I am thrilled, extremely grateful and very proud to announce that Steven Taylor is the first ever winner of the annual volunteers award recently presented in memory of Scruffy within the WTWA clinical group of hospitals! To quote a colleague “Steven, consistently goes above and beyond the expectations of the role. The initiative, compassion and passion for inclusivity truly reflect the very best of volunteering, and Steven is a real asset to our Hospital Trust”. Above and beyond the role of volunteer, Steven also organised for children staying in Hospital over Easter to receive Easter eggs so that they didn’t lose out. On this day, 18 years ago, Scruffy was born so making this post today feels appropriate. I’ve also included some photographs of Scruffy … Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end! ❤️😘😇. More excitement, recently, when my human brother married the wonderful @rachelbrownson_ A missed opportunity to be a furry pageboy 😊😂🩷💙

Today I carried out the @petsastherapy_uk assessment for Arlo the magnificent #goldenretriever and his #dogdad @arvinpooloo who passed with flying colours ⭐ As we walked and talked, working our way through the questions, we noticed this lovely little lady, with her mum @fn.captures and invited her to meet Arlo. What a superstar she was, not only did she discover the softest place to stroke him was on his ears but she put him through his #dogtraining paces with sit and down and of course, rewarded his good behaviour with a #dogtreat. I see a #dogtraıner in the making! Even though Arlo and Arvin are through the assessment, this doesn’t mean they’ll automatically become a PAT Team. The #charity have stringent guidelines to follow before allowing #pet and #owner to become members and set off on their #humbling #privileged #exciting #compassionate #peopleloving sometimes #challenging hugely #rewarding #uplifting #fulfilling #fun often sharing in very #privatemoments or creating #magicalmoments and #magicalmemories adventure of #pettherapy #visits GOOD LUCK TO ARVIN & ARLO 🍀 by @scruffypetsastherapy

Hi 👋, I’m Willow - an Australian Shepherd and I’m still a pup. I met Gill in Leeds, the other day, when she was on this side of the Pennines to visit her Dad in hospital and oh boy did she need a full on pup playtime! I made sure to tease her and do loads of Jumping in to her as she sat. We had loads of snuggles too. She said I was an awesome Therapist, I made her feel so happy ❤️ 🐶 ❤️

I can’t tell you how much volunteering with @petsastherapy means, maybe this lovely email will give you a bit more of an idea …

Hi Gill

Fergus is having a fabulous time as a PAT dog. We go into Francis House (children’s hospice) every Thursday and it is SO rewarding. The youngsters absolutely love him - as do the staff. They all wait to hug him and some of the children who respond to very little, respond to him. It is more than I ever expected. I can’t thank you enough for helping Fergus become a PAT dog - I wish I’d thought of it sooner.

Celebrate Volunteers at the launch of an award, in honour of Scruffy the PAT dog, who sadly passed nearly eighteen months ago. If you’d like to join us, please DM.
The award will be presented annually to a Volunteer who will have made an outstanding contribution within the WTWA One MFT Clinical Group.
Scruffy introduced dog therapy to Wythenshawe Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital and a Hospital outside of the Group, Salford Royal, in addition to being a Volunteer at the RMCH and Trafford General, within the Moorside Unit. His volunteering took him into many different environments including schools, a hospice, lunch groups, veterans charities, care homes and many more.
He was the first therapy dog to walk the corridors and roam the wards of Wythenshawe Hospital and was very quickly taken to the hearts of everyone he met. He absolutely loved every Visitor, Patient, Porter, Nurse, Researcher, Doctor, Secretary, Ward Manager... the list goes on and on, as you know. He knew every inch of the place, learning the quick exits for his toilet breaks and where the cheese was kept but in all seriousness, there is nowhere he would rather have been than helping folk at this Hospital. Which is why this award has come about, to link his name to the place he loved with an award to the people who make it the wonderful place it is! by @scruffypetsastherapy

I can’t believe it is a whole year since I lost you, Scruffy 💔 I know many of you will have lost a cherished animal or a human and maybe you’re living through that terrible time now or it’s close and of course, it has to happen because life is a cycle but my heart goes out to you because it’s an awful thing to go through.
Maybe this video and photographs taken during our last trip at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 will bring a virtual hug to you. Please share with me this video of Scruffy doing what was in his core, caring! He was worrying for a man’s safety who was walking on rocks by the sea and when he’d satisfied himself that he was okay, Scruffy returned to me. The photographs show Scruffy being as happy as he always was. With my sincerest thanks to you for your love and support after losing Scruffy, THANK YOU, Gill! by @scruffypetsastherapy

There is an extraordinary gentleman at @johnrasmussencartoons with a huge heart. He loves dogs and lost one special boy called Jack, back in 2015. Since then, his cartoons have portrayed Angel Jack welcoming other adored dogs to heaven. He’s just created a cartoon specially for Scruffy for which I’m very grateful. I think having a visual of Scruffy happy and welcomed helps me to feel that he is happy and at peace. It’s six months since Scruffy passed away. John is passionate about rescues, Jack was an older rescue who he thought would need serious health care but thankfully, lumps proved to be none cancerous so he could live his days out with John and his family with all the love in the world and every need and want met.

Today, the 8th of June is Scruffy’s birthday. It’s a day to celebrate his life. I hope you can share, with me, a few memories and smile. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a very grateful thank you for your words of support after Scruffy passed away in mid February, I cannot express how much you helped me through a revolting time! Please may I ask that if you’re going to make a donation, at any time and for whatever amount, that maybe you make it to @petsastherapy_uk - a dog rescue sanctuary or any of the many dog charities that help people in Scruffy’s name, to celebrate Scruffy as a pet therapy and rescue dog. Thank you, Gill.
