What would a bullied kid actually do if he suddenly had superpowers?

That question is SPIRIT WEEK, our feature film. This week it’s one of the projects selected for the 2026 @thegotham Week Project Market in Brooklyn.

It started as a short, BALLOON—going viral with 6M+ views in four weeks on YouTube. The feature is a character-driven indie superhero thriller with a mother-son story as its beating heart. The film explores how we raise boys, and what a boy does with power before he knows who he wants to be.

Written and directed by @jeremymerrifield. Produced by Dream Three with @scythiafilms: @danielatbekerman (THE WITCH), @jordanhart11 and @katechamuris.

Join this discussion with indie filmmakers who are both uncompromising in their visions – Bruce LaBruce and Karen Chapman – and who have made some of the biggest hits in decades – Haley Johnson and Kori Adelson, producers of Obsession and Backrooms.

Many of us were inspired by the “independent” part of the film business. Where original stories could be born then find a path to a big audience. The purpose of the independence was to encourage the originality.

But what if the originality is getting zapped out of existence by the mediums in our hands and homes?

An incredible tool was developed in Toronto in the 1960’s, Marshall McLuhan’s lens on media and technology – The Medium is the Message.

That lens is needed now more than ever, because the roar of the algorithm – (the internal message of our media) – is drowning out the voices of our great storytellers.

Andrew McLuhan and I will frame this all up and explore how to build true independence in today’s industry. There will also be the unveiling of a new platform designed to empower the thousands of people whose labour makes the movies we love. by @scythiafilms
