For Folkestone Documentary Festival this October, we are partnering with director Saeed Taji Farouky to present The Land of Common Disgrace at SD Projects’ HQ (48 Tontine Street).

This is a collaborative “live” documentary that documents and challenges the criminalisation of pro-Palestinian protest in the UK through public, re-enactments of activists’ trials.

There will be collective set‑building on Wednesday 21st October from 10am until 6pm and devised performance, public participation and live filming on Thursday 22nd October from 9am until 5pm.

Last month we visited Allie Wharf and Willie Athill at Norfolk Seaweed, our kelp supply partner for Kelpcrete.

Their work is vital to the long-term health of the marine environment, supporting responsible aquaculture, coastal communities and marine rewilding, including the restoration of native oysters.

Sugar kelp captures CO₂ from the sea as it grows. Through Kelpcrete, we recover carbon-bearing minerals from that kelp and embody them in cementitious materials, creating a direct link between marine regeneration and lower-carbon construction.

By working with Norfolk Seaweed, we are connecting UK-grown kelp, coastal ecosystem recovery and sustainable material innovation, developing Kelpcrete as a scalable seaweed-derived alternative to traditional concrete materials.

Mirrors for Princes by Slavs and Tatars takes its title from a medieval tradition of political and ethical writing addressed to rulers.
Across both Christian and Islamic cultures, these texts asked a fundamental question: what kind of person must a ruler become in order to govern well? Christian mirrors often emphasised the formation of the virtuous prince through justice, prudence, temperance and piety. Islamic mirrors shared many of these concerns, while frequently examining justice through the practical structures of government, including officials, taxation, welfare and the redress of grievances.
Machiavelli’s The Prince profoundly unsettled this tradition. Politics begins to acquire a logic of its own, one that does not necessarily conform to conventional moral or religious codes.
Slavs and Tatars treat the genre as a living intellectual form, translating its questions of counsel, authority and self-government into contemporary sculpture, installation and language.
The extraordinary back cover reproduces the final page of a 1349 manuscript of the Qābūs-nāma, an 11th-century Persian mirror for princes. The contemporary book is quite literally wrapped in the history it examines.
Mirrors for Princes was edited by Folkestone resident Anthony Downey, who generously donated this volume, alongside many others, to the SD Projects Reading Room.
Come and read it with us.

We are inviting volunteers to support the construction of a film set for The Land of Common Disgrace, a collaborative live documentary project and performance piece devised by artist and filmmaker Saeed Taji Farouky, in partnership with Folkestone Documentary Festival.

On Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October, we will construct a courtroom at SD Projects (48 Tontine St). The set has been developed in consultation with people who have experienced arrest in connection with pro-Palestinian protests and is informed by activists’ accounts of their experiences within the British legal system.

Volunteers will work alongside the SD Projects team, the film crew and other participants to construct and prepare the set. No previous experience in film production or set construction is required. All activity involving tools will be supervised by experienced members of the team.

On Thursday 22 October, performances recounting experiences of protest, arrest and the legal system will be filmed before a live audience.

Please send us a direct message if you would like to participate.

We are pleased to announce further support from Innovate UK through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, enabling our continued collaboration with the Engineering Department at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Kelpcrete is being developed as a low-carbon alternative to traditional Portland cement, using mineral fractions extracted from cultivated seaweed.

Our seaweed is sourced from Norfolk Seaweed Farm, a UK-based commercial kelp farm with established harvesting and processing infrastructure. By linking marine cultivation with material innovation, we are developing a new construction supply chain rooted in renewable coastal resources, regional sourcing and low-impact manufacturing.

Building on our previous formulation, extraction and laboratory validation work, the Knowledge Transfer Partnership will support a major additional programme of compressive and tensile performance testing with the Engineering Department at Canterbury Christ Church University.

This next phase will focus on newer Kelpcrete mixes designed to deliver further embodied carbon reductions, while generating the technical evidence needed to assess performance with reference to relevant British Standards, including BS EN 12390 for hardened concrete testing, and BS EN 206 / BS 8500 as key specification frameworks for concrete performance, production and use in the UK.

The work will also support future engagement with building control, certification pathways and specification requirements for new low-carbon construction materials.

For us, Kelpcrete represents a potentially game-changing step towards reducing reliance on Portland cement, connecting offshore cultivation, bio-based mineral extraction and lower-carbon building systems.

*OPEN CALL OUT!*

For Folkestone Documentary Festival, we are developing a live documentary with Filmmaker and Activist Saeed Taji Farouky and looking for participants on 20th & 21st October.

Have you had interactions with the police or legal system as a result of your advocacy for Palestine? Or know someone who has?

We would like to speak with people who have had interactions with the police or the legal system as a result of their advocacy for Palestine. If you or someone you know might be interested in discussing this please drop us a message.

All initial conversations will be informal and confidential.

Here comes the science bit — concentrate!

Dr Cornelia Wilson and her team at Canterbury Christ Church University’s laboratories at Discovery Park have been integral to the scientific development of Kelpcrete.

We are using responsibly farmed kelp — also known as Saccharina Latissima — to analyse mineral yields, alginate characterisation, and material consistency through controlled laboratory research. The key is cold extraction!

With the creation of Kelpcrete, we intend to support the future of low-carbon architectural materials.
