My name is Alison Harper, and I have had the pleasure of working at San Diego State University for the past 10 years. I teach courses in physical therapy evaluation, therapeutic exercise, and musculoskeletal practice. I am also involved in interprofessional education, serve as a liaison with our Nursing program, help implement our integrated NPTE preparation program, and volunteer with ASPT.

In addition to teaching, I own San Diego Physical Therapy, a cash-based practice that began in a small private gym and now operates out of my home-based clinic. I primarily work with adults in the areas of orthopedics, injury prevention, wellness, and longevity, although I have also treated pediatric patients in the outpatient setting. I am certified in Applied Functional Science and ergonomics and have presented workshops on home-office ergonomics and exercise. I also teach anatomy to Pilates instructors and enjoy collaborating with Pilates professionals to bring a physical therapy perspective to their clients.

I have a strong interest in health, wellness, longevity, and nutrition. I have completed several nutrition courses and hope to eventually earn a nutrition certification that I can incorporate into my practice.

Outside of work, I have a 3½-year-old and a 5½-year-old—because at these ages, the half definitely counts! Much of our time is currently spent at T-ball and soccer. I love hiking, Pilates, strength training, traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending as much time outside as possible. by @sdsudptsa

Hi everyone, my name is Amara Dumas, I am in Cohort 14! I’m originally from San Diego, went to Cal Poly SLO to get my BS in Kinesiology, and am very fortunate to be back in San Diego for PT school. I chose SDSU because I aligned with the close knit service oriented community and could not imagine myself elsewhere! I decided to pursue a degree in physical therapy when I took Functional Anatomy as part of my undergraduate curriculum and fell in love with learning about the bones and muscles.

The areas of physical therapy that interest me the most are pelvic health and orthopedics. I am hoping to practice a mix of the two and spread better understanding regarding pelvic health!

Outside of school you can usually find me at the beach. I work part time as a Del Mar lifeguard where I have learned to scuba dive, drive the rescue boat and much more. I also love surfing, swimming and playing beach volleyball with my friends. For study breaks, I enjoy making ceramics and baking sourdough :)

I am so grateful to be a part of the SDSU DPT community and for all the friend and family support I’ve received along the way! by @sdsudptsa

Hi! My name is Yusuf Rehman and I am currently a 3rd year in Cohort 13. I'm from Altadena, CA but grew up all around the LA area before ending up here in SD! I chose SDSU because I loved the small class sizes, mentorship, weather, and I wanted to be apart of the San Diego Community. I have had the pleasure to serve as the Community Coordinator for DPTSA last year and really enjoyed the opportunity to create volunteer events that connected our program to the San Diego Community. My interest in PT began in high school as a patient and grew as I became interested in sustainable initiatives in college. I fell in love with the idea of how PT felt like the most sustainable form of medicine and loved learning about how to make a lasting impact in someones life. I hope to pursue orthopedic/ Neuro PT and stay creative! Outside of school, you'll often find me in the water surfing, snorkeling, or floating. I also enjoy hikes, having cultural cooking nights, trying new sports, and spending time with family and friends. A fun fact about me is I used to sew and I sold tote bags that I made out of old thrifted pants! by @sdsudptsa

Hi, my name is David Richards and I've been working in the SDSU DPT program for 3 years. I teach Pathophysiology, PT evaluation, Therapeutic Exercise, Modalities, 2 semesters of Neuro, and Differential Diagnosis (whew... that's a lot!!!) As a PT, I consider myself a generalist, but I am a board certified specialist in Neurology (NCS) by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Most recently I have been working in home health as a part of Rehab Without Walls which provides CARF accredited rehabilitation services in the home for patients with complex neuro diagnoses. In my free time you can find me hiking, exploring, gardening, and bodysurfing in my spare time. I love all things outdoors! Recently I've really enjoyed organizing nature hikes for our DPT students to provide a much needed opportunity to touch grass and decompress from the rigors of PT school. That is when I'm not shuttling my two young boys to sports and after school activities.... I was born and raised in San Diego and am so happy to be back in my home town after spending almost 20 years away. I love sharing hidden San Diego with people, so don't hesitate to ask me about lesser-known places to visit and things to do in SD! by @sdsudptsa

Last Night, our co-founders Sean Hill, PT, MPT, FAFS, CSCS, and Bryan Hill, and our Regional Clinic Director Brittany Hollenbeck, PT, DPT, FAFS, CERP spoke in front of @sdsu Physical Therapy students

Having the opportunity to sit on a panel and speak with the next generation of physical therapists was an absolute privilege.

The students asked thoughtful questions about the business side of physical therapy—from what it takes to start and grow a successful practice, to how leaders navigate difficult decisions and adapt to an ever-changing healthcare landscape.

We also had the chance to discuss one of our favorite topics: Applied Functional Science (AFS) and the impact it has had on our clinical approach and professional development.

One of the most meaningful conversations centered around the future of the physical therapy industry, including how evolving insurance models continue to influence patient care and business operations.

It’s inspiring to see so many passionate, curious, and driven future PTs preparing to enter the profession. The future of physical therapy is in good hands.
