POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last week we had the opportunity to gather as an SDSU Leadership Studies community: faculty, staff, students, donors, and friends of leadership studies. We celebrated our Leadership Studies Majors and Minors and all they have accomplished. We honored @carl_barcelona_ as our 2026 Outstanding Graduate “OG” in Leadership Studies and recognized @_worldwideceleb for being awarded the prestigious Zahn Spirit of Innovation Prize. Our own Dr. @rtimm65 challenged our graduates to not only pursue their futures with intention, but to also live a holistic and rich relational life. To say we are proud is an understatement. So much to celebrate and be grateful for as we conclude another graduation season. Special thanks to @sydneysoriano_ for serving as co-planner extraordinaire for the event. #sdsuleadershipstudies #sdsuarpe #arpe #sdsucoe #sdsuleadership by @sdsuleadershipstudies

This weekend, I got to accompany our SDSU Leadership Studies graduating students at Commencement. Their brilliance and commitment to building a better future inspire me every day, and it is truly a privilege to have been part of their journeys and to send them off into the world with purpose and courage.

Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journey. I will forever be grateful for the trust, the lessons, and the reminder that transformation is always possible.

The world is better because you are in it. 🥺

It was an amazing night celebrating the Class of 2026 at the College of Education/IS3D commencement ceremony!

This year, we had 430 bachelor’s students and 419 credential candidates eligible for graduation. We can’t wait to see the positive difference you’ll all make for children, families and communities!

As Commencement approaches, we’re highlighting each of the College of Education’s 2026 Outstanding Graduates. Next up is Carl Barcelona from our leadership studies major!

Carl knows what a difference dedicated higher education professionals can make.

Growing up in San Diego after immigrating to the U.S. at a young age, Carl is a first-generation college student who overcame a learning disability diagnosis thanks to his own persistence — and the help of others. Now, he strives to help other students succeed through a career in higher education.

“I was fortunate to be supported by professionals who genuinely cared about my success and well being,” he said. “Their guidance inspired me to pursue a similar path. I want people to see that no matter how great the obstacles may seem, they are capable of rising above them.”

As a leadership studies major, Carl appreciated the strong sense of community and meaningful connections with his fellow students. He also said he was able to strengthen his “soft skills,” such as communication, collaboration and self-awareness. He selected Leadership Studies Director Lisa Gates as his Most Influential Faculty Member.

“Dr. Gates embodies the kind of professional I aspire to become,” he said.
