As Commencement approaches, we’re highlighting each of the College of Education’s 2026 Outstanding Graduates. Next up is Carl Barcelona from our leadership studies major!

Carl knows what a difference dedicated higher education professionals can make.

Growing up in San Diego after immigrating to the U.S. at a young age, Carl is a first-generation college student who overcame a learning disability diagnosis thanks to his own persistence — and the help of others. Now, he strives to help other students succeed through a career in higher education.

“I was fortunate to be supported by professionals who genuinely cared about my success and well being,” he said. “Their guidance inspired me to pursue a similar path. I want people to see that no matter how great the obstacles may seem, they are capable of rising above them.”

As a leadership studies major, Carl appreciated the strong sense of community and meaningful connections with his fellow students. He also said he was able to strengthen his “soft skills,” such as communication, collaboration and self-awareness. He selected Leadership Studies Director Lisa Gates as his Most Influential Faculty Member.

“Dr. Gates embodies the kind of professional I aspire to become,” he said.

We do not take for granted that it is a rare and beautiful gift to feel that you are living your purpose...as a couple of people who have struggled through darkness and adversity, moments like this one captured by the incredible @lisa_gatesey_mama at @sandiegostateuniversity are treasured in our hearts. Our Concert & Convo program gives us the opportunity to bring what we've learned into university classrooms and to share our music and our story with openhearted students. We couldn't be more grateful to @coachmike274 for helping us bring this program to life and for working to keep it growing and expanding! 🙏🩷

Thank you so much to @dougiemanross and @linrayeward for rocking SDSU with us!! We love you guys and appreciate ya being a part of this journey!

The program raises awareness and seeks to destigmatize conversations about mental health — all through the power of music. Enjoy a live performance and engage in dialogue with the band members about the content of the songs.
