I would like to offer words of outrage, words of solidarity, words of courage, words of comfort… but there is so much to be said, and so little time to say it. My heart will always be with the oppressed people of the world, who suffer under ungodly systems wrought by those who worship the false idols of greed and war.

I dream of a day where LMU can say, with confidence, clarity, and transparency, that we do not invest in war profiteers, that we do not invest in weapons manufacturers, private prisons, or fossil fuels.

I dream of a day where LMU treats our students, staff, and faculty with the same care that we treat our trustees. I dream of a day where students can speak up, and say BREAK ICE, STOP THE WAR, and FREE PALESTINE, without being stifled, silenced, or ostracized. Because their cause, and their words, are right and just.

Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do good. Seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the orphan. Speak up for the widows.”

I dream of a day where people with courage and conviction are celebrated, not criticized. I dream of a day where our Mission isn’t just words, but actions. Because we are not mice: we are LIONS.

If you’ve been sad, if you’ve been exhausted, if you’ve been struggling to go through the motions of everyday life, good. It means you have a heart. Be free to feel. Be free to mourn. Be free to weep, without embarassment. Be free to take time for yourself.

But also be free to cheer. Be free to celebrate, without embrassment. Lean into the moments of joy in your day. Because we are worthy of joy. And we are here, on this beautiful campus, surrounded by good people. And we are not alone.

There is always hope, as long as we work together. Find your friends, and your community, in your classroom. Find your friends, and your community,  on the Bluff. Find your friends, and your community, in the Loft. And celebrate each other, and celebrate with each other.

In the words of Ignatius of Loyola, “Laugh, and grow strong.”

Thank you for joining us.

I remember the first time I heard the Violent Femmes on the radio. It was 1993. I had just started sixth grade, and I had begun alternating from my usual rap station 106.1 KMEL Jams and dabbling in 98.5 KOME (RIP) alternative rock radio. Indie music that had previously been labeled “college rock” was infiltrating the mainstream, and bands that had been niche in the ‘80s but had proven themselves to have staying power were now revered. One afternoon after school “Kiss Off” came on. It blew my mind. The guitars were acoustic, unplugged, but hit as heavy as any metal or punk riff I had heard. The vocals and lyrics were unique: honest and vulnerable and funny and a little dark. And it spoke to me, and unearthed all of the feelings I had ever had about being weird and misunderstood. I fell in love with the music of the Violent Femmes that day, and bought their self titled album shortly after. To my surprise, my mom and my little brother loved their album as much as I did. Last night, I got to see them play that album in its entirety, to a theater of fans who loved it as much as I did. We sang along together. It was a joyous evening. My third or fourth time seeing them. Very grateful they are still touring. Thank you, gentlemen. Last Friday my buddy Antar @iamshooter hooked up backstage passes to the Ice Cube show in Long Beach, with Warren G opening! I grew up on gangster rap, and I haven’t seen Ice Cube live this century, though I did catch him on the Family Values tour in 1998 and the Up in Smoke tour in 2000. 🔥 🧊 Cube dropped a set that was all killer, no filler, and miraculously played all of my favorite tracks, including cuts that were not obvious choices… but of course he dropped the massive anthems as well: Bow Down, Ghetto Bird, Check Yoself, Bop Gun, You Know How We Do It, and Today Was a Good Day. I gotta say it was a good day! Shout out to my friend Mark, rest in peace, who let me borrow his Lethal Injection CD back in high school. 🙏🏻 taken in F&M Bank Amphitheater by @seamusr
