A few years before we lost the most influential person to modern surfing, @dick_brewer, Uncle @darrickd and I had two balsa wood blanks made by Bones, intended for Dick. Uncle D was determined to help make one of my dreams become reality: having Dick shape a 5’8” balsa tow board for me.

As time passed, unfortunately, Dick’s health declined, and his time in the shaping bay sadly came to an end. For three years, those blanks sat on my surf racks—I didn’t know what to do with them. Unsure of why in the moment I didn’t want anyone to finish them, though I played with the idea from time to time. I held onto them, hoping the right opportunity would come along.

Last year, @alyc.at introduced me to her uncle, Owl @brewerchapmansurfboards, who had learned to shape from Dick himself back in the ‘70s. I knew immediately he was the only person who felt right to finish them.
In his extensive shaping career, Owl has only made a handful of tow boards, so I was honored that he chose to make one for me—bringing life to the blanks that had been sitting for so long. The board came out incredible and I can’t wait to send this thing into some monsters.
