It was great to finally meet Sean Carney, better known as Sean Carnage, in person at Visible Voice Books. I was moderating a panel for the release of John Delzoppo’s amazing new book, Where Shit Happened: The Paper Trail to Speak In Tongues. Sean was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and moved to Cleveland in 1990 to attend Case Western Reserve University. He lived in Cleveland for 13 years and became part of the city’s underground music community, booking shows at Speak In Tongues and later serving as editor and publisher of U.S. Rocker. His family also has deep Cleveland roots. His father attended John Carroll University, and members of his family still live in Twinsburg and Lakewood. Sean was excellent on the panel, sharing many stories about his time at the club, the people who passed through it, and his years living in Cleveland. Sean could not have been kinder, and I was happy that he agreed to let me take his photograph.

Sean moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and has continued to document and support underground music as a filmmaker, producer, and concert promoter. His long-running Monday Nights series presented more than 500 consecutive Monday-night shows between 2005 and 2014. His 2006 documentary, 40 Bands 80 Minutes!, preserved an important part of the Los Angeles experimental music scene. Sean also recently donated copies of U.S. Rocker to Cleveland Public Library, adding to the historical record of a publication that documented Cleveland music from inside the community. Karen Centerfold RIP. I first encountered her at the anti-Iraq war protests in Hollywood in 2003. She was leading the black clad Antifa kids against the LAPD/SWAT pigs like Marianne leading the French revolutionaries. Later, Karen would become a Monday Nights fixture (DM me & buy my book for a full complement of Centerfold pics). She was also the bane of my existence. Last summer she showed up at my gallery opening and attempted to kill the gallery owner with her car. Aye aye aye.

Despite—or because of—all the chaos, I’ve always liked Karen. She was firmly on the side of the agitators. She said: Don’t be a buffoon. Don’t be square. Life is rock ‘n’ roll. Grab the mic and put on a groovy show. See you at the giant Venice drum circle in heaven. 🌹🥀 by @seancarnage

When the flier art completely captures vibe of the show… Watching Arab on Radar and The Flying Luttenbachers at this time was like witnessing a freak show, with music as overwhelming and intense as their imposing stage presence. Straight up scary, in your face, forceful art. Both bands came through SIT a bunch, where they warped many ears and minds over the years
