Artist Spotlight: Sean Gerstley

Sean Gerstley approaches clay as a sculptural material, building large-scale forms that emphasize mass, surface, and the physical process of making.

In this vessel sculpture, metallic glazes shift across the hand-built surface, heightening its irregularities and giving the work an almost geological presence. The vessel remains legible as a familiar form, but at this scale it becomes something more architectural and bodily.

Final week.

If you’re passing through Terminal A at PHL, don’t miss Immediate Earth, Sean Gerstley’s ceramic world tucked just beyond security.

Gerstley’s work sits at the intersection of sculpture and design, reimagining domestic objects through an improvisational, materially driven approach. Working in clay, he preserves each gesture, pinches, grooves, and movements, then fixes them through firing into vivid, tactile forms.

On view through April 8.
