This is the WORLD’S OLDEST PUB 🇮🇪🍻 Sean’s Bar (@seansbar) in Athlone dates all the way back to 900 AD, when it started as an inn for travelers crossing the River Shannon. That means people have been stopping here for food, drinks, and good company for over 1,100 years!

When the pub was renovated, they actually uncovered parts of the original wattle-and-wicker walls, along with old coins that were believed to have been used by traders crossing the river. You can still see some of those artifacts inside today, which makes grabbing a pint here an educational experience, too. 👀

But whether you come for the history, the music, or just to say you’ve had a Guinness in one of the world’s oldest pubs, Sean’s Bar is one of those places that’s absolutely worth adding to your Ireland itinerary! 🍀

A pub that’s over 1,100 years old 🍻

This is Sean’s Bar is in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. It dates back to around 900 AD and holds the Guinness World Record for Ireland’s oldest pub. How cool is that!? Paper currency wasn’t even available back then!

It’s packed with history, character and plenty of stories. Definitely worth adding to your Ireland road trip.

Would you have a drink here?
