Get off the motorway and drink a pint in the oldest bar in Ireland! 900 AD with evidence to prove it. Low ceilings, dark wood, a fire going and bartenders ready to tell stories and laugh. (ask them about hurling and you’ll make lifelong friends) Add this to your Ireland road trip itinerary. We stopped on our way from Dublin to Ashford Castle.

Can’t come to Athlone, Ireland and not stop into Sean’s Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland, tracing its roots to the 900’s, over 1100 years of history. I had to have a dram of their own whiskey, of course. The locals are spinning yarns… the F-bombs are flying… it’s fantastic!

The oldest Bar in Europe (900AD) - Seans Bar on the way from Galway to Dublin. The vibe here is great. I've heard the whiskey is a little strong... I guess you can be the judge. Defintely a historic place to visit. Plan for an hour or two to hang and enjoy the atmosphere. Tours are given throughout the day. #SeansBar

We finally made it to Sean's Bar, the oldest pub in the world!! First built in 900AD!
The cosy front bar was full of friendly, chatty locals who made you feel welcome. Thanks Keith for your great service & excellent suggestion as they don't serve food to have a meal at Gertie Browns, see photo 12.
Oh & there are photos of the rest of Athlone as well.
Cheers!

Nobody does cosy pubs quite like the island of Ireland.

Think roaring fires, snug corners, traditional music, friendly conversation and the perfect place to settle in for an evening.

From historic city pubs to welcoming spots tucked away in small towns and along the coast, save these for your next trip.

Which one are you pulling up a chair in first? 👀
