Whew, this is not the post I expected to make!

When I start something, I go all in. Every ounce of passion and energy goes into it. These past two years, I have truly been blessed to bake fresh milled products for this community.

Our path changed this year, and keeping up with the demand became increasingly difficult. Then it became clear that this isn’t what I’m supposed to do anymore.

Through this decision, I met some incredible bakers at @sunrise.bakes and strongly encouraged them to look into fresh milled flour! Their story is incredible, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure fresh milled products are available in our community. (So follow and support their journey)

God used this community, through bread, to support our family when we needed it most, and we will never forget that.

Who knows? I might do pop-ups here and there. I’ll keep this account open and share when I can. I’ve helped over 50 people start milling for their families, and no one ever regrets it. I will continue shouting from the rooftops that it’s one of the simplest things you can change for your family’s health!

I can’t express enough how incredible it has been to become friends with so many of you. Don’t be a stranger. ā¤ļø by @second_rise_bakery

So… no, we aren’t opening a bakery.
For a while, I felt really embarrassed to even say that. We told people we were opening one. People were excited for us and believed in us. When it didn’t happen, I felt like I let people down.

Looking back now though, I can honestly see He was protecting us. My body couldn’t have handled it. Our family couldn’t have handled it. We were trying so hard to make something happen that neither of us had peace about.
Do I still bake bread? Yep. 😊 Every Friday I drop off fresh milled bread at Piney and honestly…it’s life giving. I get to do what I love without it consuming my life.

Maybe one day God will lead us to open a bakery. Maybe He won’t. I’m just thankful that God see’s the whole picture when I can only see whats right infront of me. by @second_rise_bakery

Part 2

I remember praying, ā€œGod, I know You gave me this bread business. I love the impact it’s had on our community, but it’s destroying me.ā€I was neglecting my kids, and Dustin and I were constantly at odds.

After Dustin lost two jobs in two weeks last November, I realized something I hadn’t wanted to admit.I had stopped trusting God to provide.I thought the bread business was God’s blessing, but deep down I had made it my security. I believed if I stopped baking, everything would fall apart. An older woman in my life said something that challenged me ā€œRachael, your husband isn’t your provider. God is.ā€

Because of my health, I was forced to stop baking. Here we were again with no income, six weeks of recovery ahead of us, a tiny bank account, no assets, and rent to pay. I remember thinking, ā€œI thought losing everything in the fire was the last time we’d have nothing. Why are we here again?ā€

I finally agreed to surgery and chose to trust that God would provide. The week of my surgery, Dustin got his first job through Thumbtack. Since then, he’s been booked almost nonstop, often working 12-hour days, six days a week…..Recovery was hard. I had very little help. B But God already knew what I needed.

A woman I had met only a few months before my surgery became my lifeline. She showed up when I couldn’t even get out of bed.As the weeks went on and Dustin kept getting more work, we were honestly in disbelief.

God answered our prayers. Just not in the way we expected.

Part 1 of us opening a bakery (make sure you read to the end)

……..

I think I’m still processing everything that’s happened this year. It started out pretty dark, with honestly very little hope to hold onto except our hope in our loving Father, who has brought us through so much.

In February, we were moving full steam ahead to open a bakery. Everything felt right. people came into our lives out of nowhere. Things were falling into place. We had the funding, the building and the plan. But one thing we didn’t have was peace.

I would toss and turn all night, wake up drenched in sweat, and tell Dustin, ā€œI can’t do this. This doesn’t feel right.ā€ But I thought it was fear. I thought I was just afraid of failing, so I pushed through because w e believed this was our only option.

We were baking 200 loaves a week, running on very little sleep, and life felt so hard. This wasn’t what I dreamed our life would be. After the fire (just last year) and finally getting settled into a new home, I thought the chaos was over and we were stepping into a new chapter.

Instead, life kept changing, and my mind and body just couldn’t keep up. I felt misunderstood, overwhelmed, and shut down. I went into a cave and let very few people in. I became an angry wife. I snapped at Dustin every time he ruined a batch of bread. That wasn’t me. I love life, but here I was barely holding on.

Even through all of it, I never stopped praying. I never stopped asking God for wisdom. I just kept saying, ā€œLord, I don’t understand what You’re doing.ā€

Then my hernia got so bad that I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I kept putting off surgery because we didn’t have insurance, we didn’t have the money, and I couldn’t stop baking. After big bake days, I would end up on the kitchen floor in tears. I couldn’t lift another cast iron pan without crying.

I thought the bread business was what God had for us.

I had no idea He was about to completely change our lives.

It’s crazy to me how simple food really is. Grits is just ground up corn. And corn is a whole food, but our society likes to take out the good stuff and demonize it and then sell you a subpar product. Organic whole corn is vibrant and full of life. When you grind it at a course setting, you can make grits with it! Or mail it more fine and now you have corn milk. Grits and corn muffins taste amazing with fresh ground corn. by @second_rise_bakery
