The day has come...

Our beloved Westgate / Patton Ave "Wormhole" is no more 😭

The Westgate exit and flyover bridge off eastbound Patton Ave (going toward downtown from West Asheville) is scheduled to 🚫 CLOSE TODAY 🚫. Its removal is a part of the ongoing I-26 connector project.

According to the Asheville NCDOT office, drivers coming from that direction who want to reach our store in Westgate will be directed to do the following :

1️⃣ At the same exit that the Westgate Flyover was located, stay to the right to detour instead to I-240 westbound.

2️⃣ Promptly exit at Haywood Road, turn left to cross over I-240, then take another left to go back the way you came by taking I-240 eastbound. (Not entirely captured in the graphic above, but it's the first exit you come to, the return route is hilighted above with the rest of the detour).

3️⃣ Then immediately take the Westgate exit on your right, which will drop you under the Jeff Bowen Bridge and up to Westgate Shopping Center as usual.

Alternatively (but not a directed detour), eastbound Patton Ave drivers can also continue across the Jeff Bowen Bridge and exit at Merrimon Ave, then loop around to return to I-240 westbound and then take the service road at the bridge to Westgate.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause and appreciate your patience as we all navigate this massive and disruptive connector project together! 🙏

But let's pour one out in memory of Asheville's most celebrated cheat for skipping Patton Ave traffic across the bridge... 🫗

Meet Larry's youngest duo of stylists 🤩

Larry has no clue how to dress, so thankfully for him he has a whole team covering his back, literally!!

Today's fashion helpers come in the form of two extended 2G family members, children of long time Second Gear teammate, and they are always eager for a job or two to help out -- even have their own set of name tags in the back!

I mean, those shoelaces in footwear aren't going to tie themselves amiright? But like in a non labor law being broken sort of way, ya know? 😂

Well anywho...

That brings us to today and a very naked Larry Bear that needed to cover his derriere and quick!! So thankful these two arrived just in the nick of time to have him looking really fine!

We give this fit a 9/10, color coordination is on point and we know for a fact that fanny packs are fully back in the limelight and we're here for it, honey.

Thanks guys, that's some excellent team work to make the Larry Bear dream outfit work!! 💪

Introducing our September / October Non-Profit of the Month: Color My Outdoors 🌿

What if getting outside wasn’t just about access to trails, rivers, and mountains...but also about seeing yourself reflected in the people leading the way?

That’s the work of @colormyoutdoors, an amazing non-profit that is creating clear pathways for People of Color to confidently lead their families and communities outdoors. 🌲🏕️

Through access to certifications like Wilderness First Aid, Color My Outdoors cultivates outdoor Leaders of Color, then hires these leaders to run storytelling trips and family-based outdoor programs -- helping parents and caregivers build the skills and confidence to get their own families outside!

And their work doesn’t stop when the adventure ends...

Through their multimedia storytelling platform, they amplify these journeys and the voices behind them, helping rewrite the outdoor narrative and create a future where People of Color can see themselves reflected, respected, and leading in every corner of the outdoors. We love this because representation matters!!

At the heart of this work is Founding Executive Director Simone Adams, whose two decades of nonprofit leadership have helped make Color My Outdoors a driving force for community, career access, and a more inclusive outdoor industry. If you haven't met her, we definitely recommend you should - look for a tabling event in October to come meet her and learn more of Color My Outdoors work at the store.

We’re proud to put our support behind Color My Outdoors and the leaders who are helping shape what the future of outdoor recreation looks like. Especially when it comes to making the outdoors more accessible, welcoming and more representative of the incredible communities we serve.
