Vineyards are complex living systems.

However, regenerative viticulture becomes more manageable when you work in a simple cycle: observe, reflect, respond 🍇

Over time, this builds resilience and steadies yields, creating stronger, healthier vineyards.

But regenerative viticulture is a learning curve, so we just opened enrollment for a free email course: Regenerative Viticulture, Simplified 🌱

In 7 short lessons, over 7 days, you can build a routine that helps you:

• See change clearly across the season
• Know what to focus on
• Make harvest decisions with more clarity
• Recover faster from weather and stress events
• Set next season’s priorities with confidence
• Each email takes about five minutes and the lesson gives you one practical action to apply straight away

How Bedrock Vineyard stay on top of ROC certification audits 🌱

For the team at Bedrock Vineyard (@bedrockwines), gathering ROC data is a high priority, so they built their testing metrics and activities directly into Sectormentor.

By routinely uploading Haney tests and PLFA (Phospholipid Fatty Acid) lab results, and logging visual soil health indicators on the Regen Platform, all their certification evidence sits alongside day-to-day farming notes. It’s accessible at any moment, and when audit time comes, reports can be created in seconds ⏱️

Technology should empower growers, not replace them 👩‍🌾🤝

Beyond saving time and having a central platform to keep the whole team on the same page, Casey Barton from Bedrock (@bedrockwines) values working with a system that puts people first.

“I think Sectormentor is also unique. I feel like it still centers scouting and being out in the field, having people involved... I think it’s important to have people centered in that system, making observations and being in the field. This is different to what a lot of the other ag tech companies are offering, I think that’s cool. It feels like Sectormentor reflects back a lot of things that we value at Bedrock: the best way to support people with technology is to empower them through their own observations in the field, rather than taking that away.” – Casey Barton, Bedrock Vineyard

How Bedrock Vineyard cut decision-making time by 75% ⏰🍇

Before Sectormentor, the team at Bedrock (@bedrockwines) were juggling another data system, spreadsheets, and photos sent by text. As Oliver Lockhart puts it, “it was definitely just kind of all over the place.”

After nearly a year with Sectormentor, here’s the difference they’ve:

“Before it would have been 2 hours in the office, putting a report together just to make a call on how we’re gonna prune, or how we’re gonna do our fruit drop this year… versus now, I can check everything over in the course of 10 minutes, and make a decision in 30 minutes. It’s definitely a huge, huge time saver.” – Oliver Lockhart

It’s 1854 and Bedrock Vineyard has just been planted 🌱

It’s one of the first vineyards in the area, planted by future Civil War generals William “Tecumseh” Sherman and Joseph “Fightin’ Joe” Hooker.

Over the next 150 years, this vineyard will see a global epidemic, an extensive replant by Senator George Hearst, Prohibition, and a partitioning of the vineyard by feuding families 🕰️🍇

Today, Bedrock Vineyard (@bedrockwines) is tended by a small team of dedicated, progressive viticulturists led by Jake Neustadt (@j_neustadt), with the shared ethos and mission of protecting and rehabilitating the natural landscape and historical identity of the vineyard.

But how does a small team nurture over 152 acres of some of the oldest vines in California?

We recently spoke to Oliver and Casey (@caseydillaa) from the Bedrock team, delving into how they’ve used Sectormentor to support their mission.

How does a small team nurture over 152 acres of some of the oldest vines in California? 👩‍🌾

Dating back to 1854, Bedrock Vineyard (@bedrockwines) is well-known for its historic vines.

Today, the Bedrock team, led by Jake Neustadt (@j_neustadt) prioritise rehabilitating and cultivating its historic ranches, alongside rebuilding eco-systems and diverse landscapes, with life-filled soil and surrounding biodiversity.

Given the complexity of this historic site, we wanted to know what it takes for a small team to manage over 152 acres of old vines holistically.

So, we recently interviewed Oliver and Casey (@caseydillaa) from Bedrock on how they use Sectormentor to co-ordinate as a team, make informed decisions quickly, track and learn from their experimentation, and produce ROC-certification audit reports.

How do you maintain your cover crops? 🫜

There are so many ways to do cover crop maintenance, and there is no singular right choice!

But incase you are in need of some guidance, we’ve put together some advice from three of our Regenerative Viticulture Series guests 🍇

Here’s what they have to say:

📣 Kiwi regenerative viticulturist Nick Paulin (@vine_gardner_nick) says:
• When your cover crops reach the height of the vine canopies, opt to crimp! Do this 4 or 5 times over one season.
• Nick has found that this technique encourages clover to thrive, as the larger plants are rolled down.
• Nick has found mowing to negatively impact soil health and advises against it.

📣 Regenerative viticulturist and agronomist Sérgio Nicolau (@sergio.masterfarmer) says:
• Use your neighbours’ sheep to graze your cover crops during the winter when the vines are dormant.
• Make sure to use holistic planned grazing practices.
• This maintains the growth of cover crops, while improving soil and vine health by introducing a source of organic matter and nutrients through sheep manure.

📣 Organic and biodynamic viticulturist & regenerative consultant Jordan Lonborg says:
• If you want to begin grazing on the vineyard, be careful about carrying times and capacity.
• Ensure that you have a rotational grazing plan, this will help avoid any compaction or soil damage.

Want to be able to see trends in your sap and petiole lab results over time?💡

We’ve heard that more and more vineyards are using sap and petiole analysis to understand their vines, so we’ve extended our lab result extractor to include these results.

This means that you can now upload these lab results, automatically extract their data, and instantly visualise trends in your sap and petiole analysis; compare these to your other results in Sectormentor to gain a rounded insight into vine health 🍇🩺

The extractor now also supports additional values and lab result types too; if you’d like to add categories, email us and we can set up any additional values you need to extract.

Cover crop mixes to maxmise functional plant diversity - PART 3/3 🌾🌻

What does creating functional plant diversity look like in practice? We can begin by selecting cover crop mixes that prioritise functional plant diversity.

Let’s dig in to some examples from the experts:

1️⃣ Soil ecologist Dr Christine Jones’s 4 functional plant group mix for beginners 🫜

* Brassica: Radish
* Grasses: Oats
* Aster: Sunflower
* Borage: Phacelia

Despite containing no legumes, this mix outperformed legume-only plots in field trials for nitrogen availability and soil biological activity because of its broad functional diversity.

2️⃣ Kiwi Regenerative viticulturist Nick Paulin’s (@vine_gardner_nick) 12-species mix from 5 functional plant groups ☘️

* Brassica: Radish, mustard, alyssum
* Cereals & grasses: Oats, rye corn
* Chenopods: Spinach
* Legumes: Lentils, crimson clover, micro clover, persian clover, white clover

Nick adds that you can opt to include more peas and beans in this mix, but this is what works for his particular seed drill. Overall, he has found this mix to work very well across the whole vineyard.

3️⃣ Sérgio Nicolau’s (@sergio.masterfarmer) 16-species blend across 7 functional plant groups 🌾

* Grasses: Ryegrass, black oats
* Legumes: 4 different types of clover
* Brassicas: Mustard, radish, turnips
* Amaranths: Beetroot, spinach
* Asteraceae: Calendula
* Polygonaceae: Buckwheat
* Boraginaceae: Phacelia

When Sérgio, regenerative viticulturist and agronomist, upgraded to this 16-species mix, he experienced a big boost in soil activity 🪱

To Learn how best to sew, maintain & terminate these blends, comment ‘cover crops’ below or head to the link in bio for the full guide 🔗📚
