Regenerative farming is grounded in working with nature. The strategic use of technologies can strengthen decisions, reduce inputs, and free up time for the observation and adaptation this work demands.

The final practical workshop on "Leveraging Technology" features three tools doing exactly that:

✏️ Sectormentor (Abby Rose, Founder) — A digital platform to track and visualize essential farm indicators across vine health, phenology, disease & pests, and yield. The 10 Regen Indicators, co-developed with Nicole Masters, turn earthworm counts and infiltration rates into a decision-making framework.

🍇 Saga Robotics (Caine Thompson, GM & RVF Board Member) — Thorvald is an autonomous, electric robot effectively treating powdery mildew with UV-C light — no fungicides, no heavy tractor passes — while cameras gather vine data on every run.

🐞 Parabug (Kevin Hill, Operations Manager & Partner) — Drones that deploy beneficial insects in half the time and half the cost of traditional release. Hilary Graves of Booker Vineyard shares her firsthand experience.

Footprints in the soil come first. These tools help extend the reach.

What a week!

On Wednesday we had a great day at the @vineyardmaggb show looking at all things vineyard related and catching up with friends.

Yesterday we had a brilliant day with @regenerativeviticulture at @silverhandestate for the first field day to start our one block challenge… watch this space!

We have been farming regeneratively in the vineyard and across the farm for many years, including using our UV-C machine from @uvboosting which has already halved our sprays in the vineyard along with us already NOT using insecticides and encouraging biodiversity, wildlife and improvement to soil structure.

In turn we see superb quality grapes going into our wine that doesn’t cost us our world 🌍

We had a great time tracking regenerative indicators with @sectormentor at @bedrockwines in preparation for our field day next month with @regenerativeviticulture. We followed the Sectormentor protocol developed with @masters.nicole to assess the ecological outcomes of regenerative viticulture including: Soil water infiltration rate, soil aggregate stability, leaf brix readings of the crop and ‘weeds’, root penetration depth, soil cover %, etc.

There are various ways that people define regenerative agriculture... It is an amorphous beast to peg down because it is not just a set of practices with boxes to check, it is an agrarian movement looking to enhance the communities and ecosystems in which we farm. But tracking specific outcomes is essential... We all need to baseline what we are doing today to see how we are living up to our potential level of regeneration tomorrow.

Test. Implement. Test. Review. Improve. Repeat. Thrive.

We would love to come assess your site as well! @napagreen

Are sustainability events the new music festival?

In the latest edition of my newsletter, Must, I look at how events like @groundswell_agriculture and the @emergentgeneration summer gathering (more on that to come) are taking the place of festivals in my calendar.

And I look forward to the next event on the horizon: @sustainabilityindrinks, a wine trade event that's 'challenging industry norms' and 'democratising access to sustainability advice.'

It will be a day of workshops and talks exploring all aspects of sustainability in wine, from the environment and carbon to social responsibility and labour standards across the supply chain.

As any good wine newsletter must, I've also included a sustainable wine recommendation, this time an organic, low intervention English red by @sandridgebarton that I tried at @bullinn_totnes last weekend. Both wine and Inn are unmissable.

See you at SID?

- SID will take place on the 21/10 at Christ Church Spitalfields between 10:30-20:30. Tickets and programme available on their website and via the link in today's newsletter (🔗 in bio).
