In the course of reporting #FishBook, I recently had the immense privilege of spending three days traveling the Taku River watershed with the @salmonwatershedsscience team, who are studying how #salmon colonize rivers made suitable by glacial retreat. (Hooray, climate change?) Thanks in large measure to the wise stewardship of @trtfnofficial, the Taku watershed has no dams, no industrial logging, no levees, and virtually no roads. Rarely have I ever been in such an unaltered basin, or seen rivers so unbound, willful, and alive — rivers who so thoroughly express what @robgmacfarlane described as water’s “indwelling animacy.” I thought you might want to see them, too. Boundless gratitude to @see_jay_esse, @britt.milner, and Jon Moore for acquainting me with this special place.

I took this photo of Flannigan's Slough in 2024. It's found where the Taaltsux̱éi Héen meets the T'aakú Héeni. The late Taku River Tlingit elder, Jackie Williams, told stories about this place changing rapidly over the past 100 years of glacier retreat, transforming from a moon-like gravel floodplain full of roots for harvest to a lush wetland offering food and cover for moose and other wildlife like beavers and muskrats. It also offers miles of gentle waterways for salmon, protecting them from the huge glacier lake outburst floods that occur here every year. It makes my heart sing each time I'm lucky enough to see it. taken in Taku River by @see_jay_esse

I need help with an Oakland @athletics mystery! In 2003, I was having dinner at the @metropolitangrill in Seattle when I ran into a group of A's dining after a @mariners game. In an awesome away-team gesture, they passed around this dessert menu and autographed it for me. I was recently reminding myself who signed it, when I noticed something that I never noticed before... "Dan Defafolo" or something similar. As far as I can tell, no one with any name like this played on the A's. It looks like it has a "75" next to it. So, I'm wondering if Barry Zito was trolling me with a fake name? He always had a reputation for being goofy. If so, this is even more awesome than I thought 😂
