Taku River sockeye salmon gearing up to spawn in their natal lake this September. By now all these animals have fulfilled their reproductive mission and transitioned into carcasses, leaching life-giving nitrogen and phosphorus into the lake where their offspring will rear. A salmon never dies; she is merely recycled. Gratitude (again) to @salmonwatershedsscience, @britt.milner, and @see_jay_esse for introducing me to these peerless fish and extraordinary place.

In the course of reporting #FishBook, I recently had the immense privilege of spending three days traveling the Taku River watershed with the @salmonwatershedsscience team, who are studying how #salmon colonize rivers made suitable by glacial retreat. (Hooray, climate change?) Thanks in large measure to the wise stewardship of @trtfnofficial, the Taku watershed has no dams, no industrial logging, no levees, and virtually no roads. Rarely have I ever been in such an unaltered basin, or seen rivers so unbound, willful, and alive — rivers who so thoroughly express what @robgmacfarlane described as water’s “indwelling animacy.” I thought you might want to see them, too. Boundless gratitude to @see_jay_esse, @britt.milner, and Jon Moore for acquainting me with this special place. More pics from our grand Taku adventure to come! Tomorrow: the fish…
